English proficiency for U-Michigan

Is it possible that, if I score high marks in SAT Reading(>700), I may be exempted from taking English proficiency test when I apply to University of Michigan? ps: My country does not appear in the list of countries that can be exempted from English proficiency test.

i doubt anyone on this forum knows. try contacting the university (probably the admissions office).

Call them and ask. But what’s the big deal? The courses are taught in English, take the proficiency test. I know I had to decades ago when I studied overseas for awhile. Theoretically with a 700 on the SAT you can certainly read English so what is the big deal that makes you want to avoid the test?

I think the test (TOEFL) is essential. Last year when I was doing research on the colleges, I found some schools only exempt you from taking the test if you reach a certain score on have both SAT I&II. But I forgot what are the subject test you have to take. Harvard is one of those schools, but I guess U of M isn’t. If proficiency test is listed on their website, you have to take one and TOEFL is the best choice.

They spell it out clearly on the website - do you have an reason for an exception? The only one I can think of is that your family speaks English in the home…

Unless you went to high school in the US, or international school, you are NOT exempt from TOEFL.

I talked to their admission office, they said if you have been studying in the US for less than 4 years, you would have to take TOEFL.
