Which one is easier....or less work???

It really depends on the instructor of the class.

My understanding is that each section has its own reading list. The best way to do this is to pick a section with a reading list of interest to you. Trying to predict the grading severity of an instructor (a grad student) is very difficult. But if at least you are interested in the material, you have a better shot of doing well in the class, I'd think. [I've never taken either, note, and I am not up-to-date on how things work, please take this as general advice.]

taking rhetoric r1a my first semester at cal was a big mistake! i had a horrible gsi! the gsi WILL make or break your grade!

we were graded on our rough drafts AND final drafts! i had friends who got C-'s on all of their papers, and they were not ****teous writers!!!

whatever class you choose, find out who is teaching it and what the reading entails... my class was all about philosophy, i hated it. beware and be smart!

I'm pretty sure most r&c classes here grade both drafts. at least the ones I have heard of do.

go take an easier R&C-a course. English, Rhetoric, and Comp. Lit are amongst the hardest.

I took Rhetoric R1A my 1st semester at Cal. We had 5 papers total - the average length being about 4 to 5 pages. We only turned in one draft per paper, not two drafts like the other classes did. The class was extremely difficult and time consuming, but looking back I learned a lot and it was probably worthwhile.

if you want an A, do not take either, unless you are very good at writing and are good at discussing.

N E I T H E R

A few of my friends took Rhetoric R1A and they were miserable. I am in Rhetoric R1B and I am miserable. I hear English R1A can be equally as miserable too.

Honestly, go with an R1A and R1B that has NOTHING to do with techinical writing (Native American, Asian American, Afro-American studies, etc.) and you will get an easy 4 unit A.

Don't make the mistake of Rhetoric or English. Even if you ARE good at writing, its just a pain in the ass when you see your friends writing ridiculously crappy 3 page papers and getting A's, and then your rhetoric GSI deconstructs your 12 page paper word by word and gives you a B+. Just don't do it. Its not good for your mental health. ;)

those of you who said neither, what EASY eng. course do you recommend for a pre-med student?

German r5a is ridiculously easy!

For my instructor, over 93% receive A's...
Some other teachers who teach German R5A give even higher percentages of A's.

The class meets 3 hrs a week and has no final... no midterm! Plus it's really interesting! I heard Professor Dewey teaches about dragons. I had Professor Banwell, she's really nice, easygoing, and brings brownies to class.

You can see the list of classes here: UCB Online Schedule of Classes: Search Results
None of the instructors appear yet... so it's if you sign up now you won't know which teacher you'll get. Also remember that the best teachers get enrolled fast.

What about creative writing? Or literature?

For comparative literature it will depend on the instructor
