Enrollment Deferment and Americorps

Hi,

I am seriously considering doing City Year, which is a volunteer program. If I apply now, I will be notified of whether or not I am accepted a little bit after May 1. The problem is that I have to commit to a college by May 1. Do you guys know if the colleges that allow gap years allow you to request deferment after committing?

I got into USC, for example. Can I commit to USC on May 2nd, get my City Year letter on, say, May 5th, AND THEN request deferment?

It's kind of a complicated situation. I would really love to do City Year and then start out as a college freshman after that. But since I'm applying late, it's kind of tricky. Please help me out!

Ouch. I’d call the schools of interest and ask them, once you get your acceptances and have narrowed down your options to just a few. They won’t yank your acceptance for asking the question. And by the way, you don’t commit to USC on May SECOND but on May FIRST (unless the date is officially changed for Sunday).

And for Heaven’s sake don’t dither about City Year! If you’re seriously considering it, apply TODAY and “consider” it while you’re doing final considerations on colleges! YOu don’t want to delay your CY acceptance any longer than you need to.

Good luck! It sounds like an awesome plan.

Hi, thanks!

Does anyone else have anything to say? I could really use some advice on the matter
