eringhaus

thoughts? opinions? its closed for the summer, so im pretty bummed i cant go in to look at the room at CTOPS.

I am also in Ehaus. I’ve heard it’s not nice at all (my room doesn’t have AC), but I’m hoping to make the best of the situation.
The good thing is that I’ve heard it’s pretty easy to make friends there because it’s the typical freshman dorm, so that’s great for out-of-staters like you and me.

wow i def feel for you on the lack of AC…luckily i got a room w/ air. i wouldve gone crazy without it. do you know how the room number thing works? like mine is 0550. does that mean im on the fifth floor, room 50 or something?

anybody who has actually lived there have anything to share?

I know someone who lived there last year, and I visited Ehringhaus a couple months ago. If you bunk the beds, room size is okay IMO. The room light was a little dim. From the outside, the dorm looks pretty ugly, but for the most part, I didn’t think it was that bad.

E-Haus facilities are the worst of all the dorms.

That being said, let me go on a tangent for a little bit.

It is truly a blessing living in a dorm like E-Haus, Craige, or HJ the first year. In addition to encouraging people to get out of their rooms and mingle, commiseration about the poor state of the facilities is often a stronger bonding tool than anything else. The people I know that lived on North Campus were much more isolated, and thus enjoyed their first year less. Of course, this evidence is anecdotal.

My point is, don’t be disappointed with your room assignment. At the end of the year, my suitemates and I were all reminiscing about HJ, and we all realized that despite the fact that we’ll be moving off-campus to a nicer, better, apartment next year, there is nothing that matches the first year experience. And part of that is living in a cramped dorm room with some total strangers(who become your best friends:)

Look on the bright side.

Oh, and A/C really isn’t a big deal. After about a week, you’ll get used to it. Most people I knew without A/C *****ed the first part of the year, but then realized that the kids with A/C were paying about $500 more a semester for a utility that isn’t even used 7 months out of 9.

tangent over.

Thanks graj08. That was all very helpful and also very encouraging to hear. :)

(Also, do you know if portable AC units are allowed? What about coffeemakers?)

theres a list of stuff you can and cant bring in the online brochure thing. i know portable AC units arent allowed, but i dont remember if coffeemakers are.

<a href=“University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Student Housing”>University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Student Housing;
click the “moving to carolina” link and the fourth page has a list of stuff thats ok to bring, and a list of stuff you cant take.

Thanks! Coffeemakers are allowed…too bad about the AC though.

Back to Eringhaus rooms with no AC… My daughter will be in one of those in the fall. I was hoping to hear something to the effect that half the rooms in a suite usually have AC, and try to “share” a little with their suitemates. Can anybody who has lived in Ehaus comment on that?
Also, I noticed above someone said those without AC pay $500 less. I hadn’t heard that anywhere before. Is that really true? (Sure would make me feel a bit better about no AC.)

Yeah, people without air conditioning pay about $550 less per semester, so they save about $1100 over the year.

Definitely worth it, as it is not needed once october rolls around.

Hey guys, former Ehringhaus resident here.

What can I say about Ehringhaus? The first is that it’s more affectionately known as E-haus - that’s what we all call it at Carolina. If you’re wondering how to say it, it’s pronounced eh-ring-house.

It’s one of the ‘high rise’ dorms and has the EXACT same layout as Craig and HJ so if you’ve seen one of the rooms in one of those buildings, you’ve seen them all. Honestly, E-haus is, I would say, the second worst dorm on campus (better than Craig because it’s closer and worse than HJ because not everyone has AC). But that being said, it’s not a bad place to live at all.

I lived in a room with no AC. In response to the suitemate sharing question: I lived in a suite with three of the four rooms filled. (Ehringhaus tends to not fill up so many of the suites don’t fill to eight people, which is nice for the bathroom). Two rooms in each suite have AC. The four other girls in my suite had AC. Me and my roommate did not. They didn’t share, haha.

The sharing can work, I’ve heard. But people aren’t around at the same time and some people don’t want to keep their doors open all the time. You can’t make people share the cool, unfortunately. I didn’t think life with AC was that bad. We had a window and stand fan running in the fall and just the stand fan in the spring, but I was born and raised in the North where we don’t have AC in schools or in houses, so I didn’t really miss anything. Yes it is hotter in Carolina, but the bricks seemed to keep the building at least a little cool. Plus we tended to keep out suite door open (nore inviting to guess, haha) so the air wouldn’t have gotten to us anyway.

If you really need AC every common room on every floor has it. Each floor has a kitchen and study area. There’s pool, foosball and a big TV on the first floor. Not the best facillities, but I never used them much to it wasn’t a big deal to me.

In the building there’s Street side and Baseball side, which is hard to explain, but you’ll know what I mean when you move in. Baseball side 4th floor and up has a sweet view of the stadium which is nice, but I’ve heard can be a little annoying in the spring when you’re trying to nap or study and all you can hear is the baseball commentary and each player’s theme song, haha.

Any more specifics, let me know.

All of this is very helpful. Can anyone tell me about the internet access at E-Haus and Carolina overall? Is there wireless throughout the hall, or do you have to hook your computer up in the dorm room?

There is generally wireless in the dorms, however the signal is weak and not guaranteed outside of the common areas. Your computer (if you got a CCI laptop) comes with an ethernet cable and you can plug into the network from your dorm room for much faster internet access.

from what i was told at CTOPS this last week, all of the halls are wireless from about ehous up. the cci guy said that was pretty much the cut off for wireless, so you have to use the ethernet.

No wireless in rooms in E-haus unless you are magical or really lucky. You’ll have to use ethernet unless you are in one of the floor common room, which all have wi-fi.

Thank you. I think I might get an Airport Express Base Station, so I can still have wireless in my room. A friend of mine said he plugged that into the provided ethernet in his room and actually got a better, faster internet connection.
