Topic: “Should people make more of an effort to keep some things private?”

Essay:

Billy Graham once claimed, "Once you've lost your privacy, you will realize you've lost a valuable thing." Society has experienced an immense amount of modernization in the last decade, and with this rise in technology has come a decline in privacy. In the new age of computer domination, it has become easier for people to remain anonymous behind their scenes while the information he or she posts goes viral and remains forever on the internet. Amanda Todd’s, a high school student in Canada, story serves as a poignant example of why people should put greater effort into keeping some things private.

Amanda Todd was one of the millions of teenagers in the world, and going to school was a normal occurrence for her. She had no previous record of being a victim of bullying and she was content with life. When pictures of her nude body were leaked on to the internet, however, she was force to endure severe criticism. Because it is easy to conceal one's identity online, hundreds of her fellow peers were able to tease her without getting into trouble. Amanda's privacy was jeopardized and the limitless internet made it impossible for her to understand who start this cyberbullying.

After enduring an excess amount of bullying at school, Amanda's family decided to put her in a new school, hoping that the teasing would end. Unfortunately, members from her school where able to reach out to her new school and share the photos. In short, Amanda faced the same treatment again. Modern technology reduces the plausibility of privacy. Information become permanent and can be transmitted anywhere on Earth in a matter of seconds. Amanda Todd chose to commit suicide because she could not bear the consequences of her full exposure on the internet. She did not put enough energy into keeping her life private, and this led to her demise.

Privacy is an essential component to one's daily life. With the increasing influence of technology, it is important to put more effort into maintaining it.
