I'm having trouble finding two good ideas to use for my UNC essays. My commonapp essay is very good but about 900 words. I know it says that you can use a different essay that is around 500 words. Do you think it would be okay if I use my 900 word essay? I realize it's much longer than what the guideline says so I assume I can't. I was just wondering if any of you knew if that was like mandatory or just a preference. Thanks

Are you a New Yorker? You must be a New Yorker with a screen name like that. I'm one, too. :)

But anyway, when college admissions officers say they want 500 words, they mean it. It's okay to go a bit over, but I would say 900 words is too much. These people are on a really tight time schedule for reading essays, you have to remember. I would recommend that you cut it down as much as possible. Where there's a will there's a way. Otherwise, I would think of something else. You can take inspiration from almost anywhere; unique essays are awesome! I'm sure you can find a new source of material if necessary. Good luck!

Yeah, haha, I am a New Yorker. I figured it was too long but wasn't sure. UNC's essays are really annoying.

Yeah, the application is pretty tedious, I'd agree. But soo worth it. :)

YankeesGiants91, I completely understand your feeling. I also wanted to use my CA essay for UNC but it's too long. I was able to cut it down to about 610.... Hopefully the lengths won't hurt our chances.
