Essay topic help needed

i brainstormed a couple of ideas for my main college essay...

1)how my work ethic paid off....too general?

2) how practicing my instrument taught me how to be responsible and manage my time and how it keeps me stress free and etc.

3) how i need classical music to keep me going in life

4)how me being short affected my life

5)my experience/impressions on visiting a foreign country

6)okay this one is a bit weird and not sure if it is appropriate...but i get diarrhea when i'm stressed and i was wondering if it was okay to write about how that affected me to work hard and stay stress free and stuff like that...

help/input/ideas/comments?
also can i use "i" in my essay or should i be more in the 3rd person?
thanks

Though you can write a good essay about any topic, some of your ideas fall into what I call “essay ruts”: common topics that yield familiar insights. #1, #2, #3, and #5 all seem to fall into that category. #6 might be unusual, but the ick factor is probably too high. Of all the ideas you’ve listed, I think #4 has the most potential.

Yes, I know that other people have written about how being short affected them. But if you write about some specific moments when being short changed your attitude and actions, that would be something interesting. Just be sure you’re pushing beyond the general “Being short taught me Some Amazing Life Lesson” essay to focus on details unique to you. Ask yourself, “What would people expect me to write about this topic?” Then steer clear of that familiar territory and explore a surprising aspect of your story instead.

Good luck!

Most of those are fairly generic essay topics. While you could make them interesting, it would be difficult. 1, 2, 3, and 5 I’ve read tons of essays about those topics.

While 6 is more unique, it might be a little too risky for some schools.

I think 4 has a good balance of not being a completely over done topic but still being appropriate for all schools. You could even add a little humor to it.

yeah i suspected that it would be risky.
i’m going to write a couple and figure out which one turns out the best.

thanks
