common app essay#1(personal experience) and supplement essay type A look very same...

realllly bad, don't do it. The supplements are to give you yet another chance to show another side of you and how unique you are - take advantage of that!

WAIIIIT...NYU's got TWO essays?!?! i thought it was just commonapp (big one and the 150word one) and then NYU's got 4 short personal statement questions....am i missing something? i'm applying to CAS...help!

I think the OP is talking abou tthe 4 short personal statements when they say "supplement essay."

simply put:

what makes you different?

i took the opportunity to showcase as many facets of my personality as possible. i personally think NYU pays special attention to the "besides the city environment, why do you want to go to NYU?" question. i found that many ppl who talk about NYU or decided to go here mistake the location. you are not surrounded by skyscrapers and Broadway shows. NYU is in the middle of the village which boasts sketchy bars and eccentric artists (which i love)

i'm fairly sure i mentioned how great the department of my intended major was. research the school/major before you write the essays. make yourself sound as if you're aware that you're applying specifically to NYU, not filling out a general application for 10 schools

oh oh....am i on right track i cant find the short answers ones...

i found this one...

Step 3 Essays
New York University: Page 6 of 7

ESSAY
The essay offers an opportunity for you to help us become acquainted with you in ways different from grades, test scores, and other objective data. It allows you to demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself. With this in mind, please write an essay, approximately 400-500 words in length. You may select one of the following topics, or you may choose to tell us something about yourself that has not been presented to your satisfaction in this application. Be sure to put your name and Social Security number at the top of your essay.

Note: Transfer students are required to complete Essay D only.

A. The best writing is often very personal. All kinds of experiences-serious, funny, unexplained, fleeting-can influence our lives and help make us who we are. Tell us about a person, place, or event in your life that has particular meaning for you, and why it is important to you. We'd especially like to hear about someone or something that has affected your life that may not have affected or even been noticed by other people.

B. Select a creative work- a novel, a film, a musical piece, a painting, or other work of art- that has influenced the way you view the world and the way you view yourself. Discuss the impact the work has had on you. (We are more interested in how the work has affected you rather than reading a detailed plot summary or a description of the work.)

C. New York is a city full of people from other places. They all bring with them a story of where they are from. Tell us something about where you're from and what single facet of your hometown experience has shaped you into the person you are today.

D. Transfers only: Please discuss your interest in transferring to New York University. Explain your reasons for wanting to leave your current college or university (or if not currently in attendance, why you left the last institution you attended), and describe how you feel your educational goals can be better achieved at NYU.

bump....im kinda confused..

now im confused....do we need to complete both common app and other stuff on nyu web site(in case applying online...)

thanks

If you are doing the common app you do 1 essay of the prompts given...then you do the NYU supplement (the common app will have links to it) which includes 4 "personal statements" in response to questions/prompts. The personal statements are not essays, rather about 5-7 sentences (500 characters is the limit). Good Luck! :)

yea...the 400-500 words essays that dnduswo was talking about is only if ur NOT doing commonapp...cuz that NYU's own application b4 they went commonapp...

wow. i have been doing common application 500 word and NYU's 500 word essay too. is that wrong?

so...after i submit the common app..how do i get to the supplement stuff...??

thanks..
