Is there a difference? Does it matter if you take EWRT 2 or 1B for specific colleges? I was told by someone that UCLA and UCB each want different ones, and they were doing 1A, 1B, 1C, an 2 to apply for both... But I can't see any of this on assist.

I'm signed up to take EWRT 2. Is this a good choice? I'm going to apply in fall to schools near me--UCSC, UCB, SJSU, SFSU, CSUEB. Will EWRT 2 work for all of them? Or is it different at each school?

I know this is a pretty specific question. I hope someone knows...

I took EWRT 2 at De Azna, it was ridiculously easy but never took 1B. Also, what do you mean will EWRT 2 work for the schools? It’s part of the IGETC and UC transferable, but what’s your major?

The only time I have seen EWRT 1B matter is when you are entering a major that requires EWRT 1C. EWRT 2 (not EWRT 1B) meets the Critical Thinking portion of IGETC (this is for both CSUs and UCs). You can also take PHIL 3 [removed PHIL 4 reference] or SPCH 9 to meet this requirement.

EDIT: I stand corrected, PHIL 4 was removed some years ago. But PHIL 3, SPCH 9, and EWRT 2 still meet the Critical Thinking requirement.

I’ve heard this too from my EWRT 1a teacher, who said you only should take 1b if you plan on going to Berkeley. However EWRT 2 is needed for the critical thinking portion for IGETC but you can take phil 3 or speech 9 as well. IMO take phil 3 or take speech 9 since they’re much easier.

NOTE: Completion of IGETC (certified by your community college) satisfies all of these requirements. See majors in other colleges for their breadth requirements.

So IGECT covers it all, right? I’m reading it correctly?

Yes. IGETC covers everything. The majors you’re looking at do not appear to be one of those that IGETC is not appropriate for. You do not need EWRT 1B. All this information is on assist under the IGETC agreements and can also be found on the pdf I linked to De Anza’s IGETC agreement.
