Exact school start dates

Hey all,

I'm trying to plan what I'm going to do in August. The school website says the semester begins on August 21st, and instruction begins the 27th. So what does this mean? What day do I have to be there if I'm moving in to the dorms?

Thanks!

UC Berkeley Fall 2008 - Residence Hall Move In

you move in on the day indicated. then you have welcome week. this is when you chill and meet people. its a week with no instruction. then school officially starts on the 27th.

Move in Days:

Triples in Units 1, 2, and 3: August 23
Everybody Else: August 24

1st Day of Instruction: August 27.

Note: THERE IS NO WELCOME WEEK THIS YEAR. The University has decided to shorten it to a "Welcome Two Days." So instead of the usual Move-In Weekend followed by an entire week of no class, this year (and I believe every year from now on) will be Move-In Weekend, followed by Monday and Tuesday without class, and then instruction starts on Wednesday. Super lame.

wow that sucks for the incoming freshman class. do you think this is in any way related to the budget cut?

I think it's very much related to the budget cut - it cuts down on housing costs (sure, 5 extra days of housing costs isn't really that much, but I guess every little bit helps), and also to cut down on the amount of partying and thus partying-related incidents.

where does it say theres no welcome week?

I can't believe that I, as a member of the freshmen class, will have to go to class 2 days after I move in.

A welcome week would have been nice.

I know the schedule said that there is class on the 27th. Is there still a welcome week?

Yes, it's two days instead of seven days.

You know, it's Berkeley; you're not allowed to have fun.

Last year, a lot of people started wishing it was class by thursday b/c welcome week got boring and they wanted to get started with classes and a regular schedule.
