my HS GPA is between a 2.9-3.0
applying to Bing School of Management
should I write and attach a note to my supplement application of why I have a low GPA?

Even with a note its going to be awfully hard to be accepted with a 2.9 or 3.0 gpa to SOM. Besides Watson for Engineering its probably the hardest school to get into. A safe gpa would be atleast a 3.5...or I assume anything over a 92 average.

SOM is very competitive, I would apply to Harpur to increase your chances. I don't think you should write an excuse note but rather concentrate on writing a great essay and possibly even re-taking ACT/SAT with the hope of scoring higher to take some attention off that GPA. I think Binghamton weighs one's GPA a little bit higher than other schools when reviewing an applicant as well. This year will be a tough one for all SUNYS because of the current state of the economy. Not only will more kids be applying to save money but the state is looking to cut funding to many schools which means that they will have to lower their enrollment. Combine those two, and you find yourself with a more competitive school (not by a whole lot though). Good luck.

that's not a good choice to apply to SOM, considering your low GPA. I would switch your application over to the other easier to get into school, such as the College of Community of Public Affairs or the Watson Engineering school. These schools are much easier to get into than SOM, and they're also easier to get into than Harpur. Then if you still want to get into SOM, I would build up your GPA and then do an intra-university transfer.

If you have a valid reason for a low gpa - for instance that you bombed one semester due to a horrible family circumstance, and that one semester brought down an otherwise good gpa - you should speak with your counselor. The counselor is in a better position to write an explanatory letter.

I completely disagree with demonfire if you want to be a business major DO NOT i repear DO NOT apply into another school because it is easier. It is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to transfer into. I went into engineering school because it was easiest to get into, but very poor choice. Engineering is extremely difficult and my gpa will not be anywhere near what SOM looks for. You need a 3.6 for them to even pick up your application and more like a 3.8 to be considered if there are any spots. I wanted to apply for spring 09 but they were full. I am in the process of filling out transfer application to other universities. If you want to do business apply SOM and if you dont get in then you will have to go to another school.. Thats a straight foward answer dont apply to other thinkin its easy to get in cuz u can be screwed like myself and a few other people i no of atleast. O and to answer your question that gpa does not look good enough for SOM
