Experiences with Honors Program and Teaching Major?

My daughter was accepted with a wonderful out of state merit award, and Miami has shot higher onto her list.

Looking back over older posts, it seems a long time since parents and students commented on the value of attending the Honors program: academic and social.

Also, my daughter intends to pursue a degree in secondary math education. Can anyone comment on the quality and reputation of Miami's teacher education program? Does Miami offer a Masters in education, and is this a 1 or 2 year program?

Thanks very much.

Miami has an excellent education program. I am not sure about the honors program though.

Yes, Miami offers master’s degrees in teacher education and education leadership. I think most take a couple years of part-time study, as many teachers work on their degrees while teaching full-time.

My husband and I both have our undergrad and grad degrees from Miami --we’re both teachers in the Cincinnati area. The young teachers who come to us from Miami are very well prepared. The education department is in a beautifully renovated building. Have you visited?

I earned a Master’s degree in special education through an online program that Miami was offering. I was required to meet on campus once a month with my cohort, but assignments were online. I completed the program in 18 months.

Several of my friends have also earned teaching degrees at Miami and have had very successful careers.

My daughter is currently in the honors program at Miami. She likes having preferred registration for classes and access to honors dorms, but the additional assignments (papers) sometimes seem like busy work. The requirements seem to change frequently too, and can be vague. Although my daughter thinks she will be glad to have it on her resume, she has been frustrated with her experience with honors.

My daughter attended ice skating camp at the school a few years ago, but we’ll be visiting with “college” glasses on this spring.

Musikman, thanks for the feedback on the Honors program. Did your daughter live in the optional honors housing, and if so, what was that like?

My daughter lived in Tappan her freshman year and liked it. That end of campus is much quieter than north campus. Her sophomore year she applied and got into Maple Street, the newest dorm on campus, still on southern end of campus. She really like it there too. The honors dorms are air conditioned, which helps in August!

I have a soft spot in my heart for Tappan Hall because I lived there many years ago. It’s still very nice though!! I think Miami is the most beautiful campus anywhere and I’ve seen a lot (but I am also biased : ). I like the fact that its not in an urban setting, but the little town still has plenty to offer, all within walking distance. My daughter is currently in a rural school (DePauw) but their little town offers almost nothing. It made me really appreciate Oxford.

John, I PM’ed you with more info about education.

My son is also interested in secondary education with a history major. He was accepted in the UASP honors. Miami is not his number one choice, but it is mine based on our visit and merit aid. Is student teaching done locally ? Also, he is coming in with more than a semesters worth of AP credit. Does anyone know if you can complete your masters in four years?

An additional benefit of the honors program is the scholarship money given to honors students for studying abroad. My daughter is on her second study abroad trip right now and that money came in handy.
