Hi,

I will be transferring for sophomore year for fall of 2011. I currently attend an LAC on east coast. I am an international student. I will be applying to NYU-Stern, UPENN-Wharton, Columbia, Cornell, CMU and probably, BU too. I am required by some schools to take an expository writing course. I need help with this as I am in the process of course-registration. What is expository writing? What course should I take to fulfill this requirement? Should it be an English course or a creative writing one? My college offers courses like writing short fiction 1 (1 credit) and writing workshop for non-native English speakers (.5 credit).

PLease do help me with this. Do hit "reply". :)

I transferred to NYU. NYU considers expository writing to be formal essay writing. Things such as “The College Essay” or “Advanced College Writing” will be accepted. The two classes you just mentioned WOULD NOT be accepted for expository writing credit. They need to be 4 credit courses and have to be specifically about writing at the college level. No creative writing, no seminars.

Thanks for your reply.

My college does not offer these courses. There are some writing courses that might be considered as college level one but as an international student, I am not allowed to take them. Are the course reqs at STern very strict?

You can call and ask Stern. From what I’ve heard, they are VERY strict with the prereqs, but they might be able to work something out with you since you are an international students.

I’m surprised that there isn’t a freshmen writing seminar or a “writing intensive” class at your school.

I guess the worst case scenario is that you must apply to transfer as a junior and take a writing composition class at a community college over the summer.

Would a three credit college writing course fulfill the nyu prerequisite?

@Sean

NYU Steinhardt did not accept my three credit English 110 for the expository writing requirement. I tried to petition it and they denied it. I would definitely call because I feel like each NYU division is a little different. When in doubt, call Admissions- they will forward the call to an adviser who specifically deals with transfer students.

What exactly is an expository writing class? Would taking Eng 101 (Composition), Eng 102 (Literature and Composition), and Eng 200 (Advanced Composition) be sufficient to satisfy the expository writing requirement?

I attend Bryn Mawr college. I asked my dean if i could take an expository writing class and she said that I could check out the classes offered in creative writing (arts) or English. I could not find any expository writing class in either of them. On Stern transfer website, it says that for those who are going for a soph. transfer, it is understandable if they are unable to complete all the reqs. However, I will see if I could take the writing course in the second semester.

Are you trying to transfer to Stern?

Like I said, I only know Steinhardt’s requirements. Definitely CALL your school’s transfer adviser, because I do not want to give wrong answers when it comes to prereqs.

Expository writing class is basically a college essay writing class. Here at NYU, they call it “Writing the Essay”.

My gut instinct is that the 101 and 200 classes would qualify, but please call and double check. Get things in writing if you have to, that’s the safest.

Also: keep the syllabus and all GRADED work from a writing class. NYU will let you submit these things and petition to have a class counted in your transfer credit statement, upon acceptance. That’s the only way I was able to prove that I had taken the EW II they wanted me to take.

My dean says that my seminar i.e. the emily balch seminar (the race for cyberspace) is an expository writing course.

PLEASE call NYU and ask someone. NYU won’t care what your dean thinks, to be honest, since it’s NYU’s decision on what classes do or do not count for expository writing. NYU has the final say on all transfer classes. Please just call admissions and check.

Yeah. I’m attempting to. This is my first year so I’ll apply next year but you’re right. I’ll probably just send them email regarding the question. Thanks again.

I apologize if it sounds like I’m being pushy. It’s just that the Expository Writing requirement is one of the most contested for transfer students. NYU is incredibly picky, almost TOO picky about this one requirement. I don’t know why they are so hard on people about it. Good luck with everything!

I will call them first thing in the morning.

Btw, do physical education courses help in satisfying NYU’s 30-32 credit hr req?

Do you need to get all of the pre reqs out of the way to be considered or can you do say half of them and then finish the others at NYU? Also does anyone know if English 111 counts?

@Maheen

I want to say no, only because we don’t have physical education classes here at NYU and there would be no equivalent credit-granting classes here. But I’m not sure.

@Dhazen

It depends on what division of NYU you are applying to. It looks like Stern wants all of them completed.
