Another college I applied to asked for an optional rec from some one who knows you, so I asked my friend’s father to write one for me. I just saw the letter this weekend, and I thought it was really good and makes me sound like I have great potential and everything. So my question is, should I send this to Penn? Will it make a difference? It’s January 10 so would that make a difference?

Unless you REALLY feel it would add a lot to your application, don't do it.

I would send it in! What's the worst it could do? I mean, if it's a good letter and shows a different side of your personality, why not?

I had three extras and I got in. Then again, they were from quite influential people, not just in my life, but in the area and world.

I didn't send an extra rec and I had mix feelings about it afterwards because so many people sent in extras. But I still felt confident about my required recs. In the end, I got in...

I think if you truly believe that the extra rec will be unique and not just repeating eveything your other two recs already say, then send it in. Especially if it is a special talent rec, that could work for you.

your friend's dad may be more biased than your teacher are, that fact won't help you. Unless he is a billionaire or some prominent and influential person, it probably won't contribute much to your app. Zhang, I felt the same way. I had my music teacher write me an incredible rec, but I didn't give him an envelope at the end because I wasn't sure if I should or not.

It's funny how everyone tries to go above and beyond. Why can't everyone just send it 2 recommendations? Period. lol
