Quick question on supplementary letter

Hi, I’m sorry for asking what’s probably a redundant question, but I searched the forums and couldn’t find it at all. Does Penn allow an extra recommendation letter (in addition to the 2 teacher evaulations)? Do they encourage or discourage it? Thanks in advance.

Yes, they allow it. If the recommendation is not something silly like another teacher or an "influential" person, but instead like a community service director you worked with, then it's fine.

okay thanks Duskstamper :). I assume the page should just have a header with the title "Supplementary Recommendation Letter", my name, address, and school followed by the actual letter and signature?

I think that'll work, but let's have some second opinions first.

if u don't mind, may i ask from whom is the letter from and about what? at least i can give you some pointers.

something silly like another teacher? i had another teacher write me a supplementary recommendation.... except it was a penn professor whose class i did well in... so it prolly had a lot more clout than just another high school teacher testifying to ur abilities. either way, if u think the rec should be killer, def won't hurt.

I worked as an intern at Seoul National University (had to proofread/revise English reports that Korean students had written). The letter will be from my employer, who is also the assistant dean of the engineering school at the University. Does it sound too much like getting a rec from an "influential" person? I did work directly under him so he actually knows me.

well he can certainly write about your level of dedication, and your language ability (proofreading other's work in a language that's not your mother tongue).

knowing you well reigns over being influential. But if he is BOTH influential and knows you well, all the better.

that sounds good....as long as its clear that you had meaningful contact with the writer of the recommendation....what does this recommendation add to your application - you should ask yourself, "what side of me will they now see that they did not see before?"....if you can answer that question with a good answer, then send the rec

Just send whatever lcause they be like YOU ROXX0R MY BOXX0r and give you lots of love and mega holliday giafts of ACEEPTANCE !!! WOOFOOO

Faux, just curious... what are your stats exactly? ;:]

I had a supplementary letter from the dean of Public Affairs at Stern (NYU). She's known me all my life and she wrote about how I coordinated her father-in-law's massive house sale (all the contents, think "garage sale" on a MUCH larger scale) for five days over the summer, among other things.
It might have helped cuz she not only attested to my interest in Wharton, and my qualifications for being there, she also made note of the fact that she's worked with Wharton grads for years and consequently she understood that it's a good fit for me.

You're absolutely allowed to have an extra rec, but don't send one just because you can--that looks bad.
It has to contribute something that isn't found in the other recs.
