My school doesn’t offer any extracurricular for the major I’m hoping to peruse in. For example, I plan to major in finance but my school offer no clubs in business such as DECA or even any clubs on where I can perhaps show off my math skills other than in regular grades and standardized tests. Since I can’t depend on my school for this, is there a way for me outside of school to be involved with these activities. Any suggestion for someone living in urban NYC?
There ought to be plenty of opportunities in and around NYC. Can you get a job at a bank? Start an investment club? Do an internship somewhere?
Thank you for replying
I think it’s fine to start a club but I’m not really familiar with the teachers nor have a bunch of friends who will be equally interested…
In addition, I was wondering how do I sign up for internships… I’m so clueless on where I should start. Do I just look for them online? I always have this sketchy feeling when I do these stuff online, however, I did sign up for SYEP but I wasn’t chosen for the raffle during the summer and I’m a upcoming junior lacking ECs.
Although, I am planning to join ModelUN once school starts again or perhaps next summer, work out some research in perhaps a nearby community college (or maybe if I have money to spare, sign up for a program in NYU… but my wallet will definitely suffer).
A part time job would be a good EC.
Yeah, but summer is almost over… most likely wouldn’t have time during weekday, dismissal time for me is different each day and I also have a college course after school on certain days. I will be quite busy when school starts but I don’t think my APs will of any concern other than maybe AP Language.
The thing is, I don’t know where could I possible find a place that will accept my strange schedule as I most likely will only have time during weekends…
Do you have any suggestions on where will I be able to look for part time jobs? Perhaps a website of some sort where I can try out…
I’m the eldest child and also not native to the country so I always have a challenging time to navigate as my parents don’t speak the language, they can’t really offer much advice
If you have time, offer some suggestions… it will be greatly appreciated!
look up Junior Achievement to see if you have anything local. Many stores would love to have weekend help and now is a good time to look as they start looking for holiday help. It is common to apply on line but it does not hurt to ask to speak to a store manager so they can look for your name. High school internships are not a big thing where I live but kids get into all sorts of colleges/majors without one so don’t worry if you don’t find one.
You can try emailing or going into a local place and see if they might be interest in having you volunteer over the summer next year and ask when a good time to contact them would be… It is possible that they might not want volunteers or require you to be 18 etc but it doesn’t hurt to look around.
Thanks for the help!
I was wondering if Junior Achievement is something that the whole school have to get involve in or can one individual just sign up… I was quite confused by their website.
Moreover, I feel like high school internships should be a big thing where I live as NYC is consider pretty urban with a lot of job opportunities especially with manhattan and everything. It’s just I’m not outspoken and afraid to go up to ask… on the other hand, I do live to quite a few banks, I just don’t know if they normally accept interns…
EDIT [sorry mess up internship with part time jobs. But I might just look for a tutoring job, just don’t know if this will be able to tie back to what I want to major in…]
Junior Achievement is probably different everywhere but here there are high school programs outside of the school for students from any high school to attend both during the school year and the summer - they are free.
It doesn’t matter what you feel - internships are not a big thing in high school and colleges do not expect that.
Many high school students do get a part time job. It doesn’t matter that it doesn’t connect to a college major. It shows that you understand job values such as reliability/dependability, following rules etc. Colleges know that jobs such as retail, tutoring, babysitting are the most common for high schoolers and they know that for some the money is the most important part. Part time jobs are considered a nice ec
Something that you are genuinely passionate about, I guess.
For me, I try and do things that are stimulating rather than trying to pretend to be someone else.
In DD’s HS, the guidance counselors are a great source of information for student-friendly jobs and internships (paid and unpaid). You might try there to get information. If you are taking any economics classes, tell your teacher you’re looking for a job or internship related to the field. Couldn’t hurt, might help. DD’s IT teacher has hooked up quite a number of students, and he encourages current strong-performing students who are interested to come talk to him about it.
Thanks for replying!
Was just wondering what DD is…
But I have a business class at a community college starting this school year, maybe I can ask the teacher once I get to meet him.
I don’t know if a tutoring job may seem too ordinary and will make up for my lack of ECs the previous two years… I mean also if I don’t get a tutoring job, I feel like I never live up to be a ordinary high school student so I will also try that out.
Thank you for being able to take your time to answer my questions
