Extracurriculars

I’m in my junior year of high school and have only been in one club. The club offers many volunteering opportunities which I have not really taken advantage of but definitely will this year. I have no extracurricular’s and have never had a job, partly because my parents have never wanted me to get one and I also can’t drive. I’m extremely shy which is why I have never put myself out there and joined any clubs. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do? I’m from Georgia btw. Does anyone know maybe any volunteering options I could do? Or jobs I could do in the future. Any stuff I could do online would be great as well. I’ve seen people usually want someone 18 years and older but I am 17.

What are you interested in, in school and outside of school? Hobbies?

There is not much I’m interested in. Or found yet. I almost got into the national honor society with my GPA but was not accepted due to me not having any extracurriculars. As with hobbies I’m trying to get back into reading, I like watching movies, and yeah that’s pretty much it.

Is there a local library walking distance from your house? They often have volunteer activities.

I’m honestly just like you! I am an introvert and am shy, but I decided to take up a waitressing job at a busy restaurant. It was really difficult in every aspect at first, I kept making mistakes (stuttering when I spoke to the customers was the WORST) and thought about quitting every shift… But if you just get through that part, you’ll earn A LOT more back. You’ll be more comfortable chatting with customers and learn a bunch of interpersonal skills. You also get to form a unique relationship with your coworkers ( I love them very much) and grow as a person. Of course let’s not forget pocket money!!! If you can’t drive, then maybe let your parents drive you on the weekends? And start small, like one shift a week.
For clubs, just join the ones you are interested in. Small talks are so much easier this way- you could just talk about what you love! For those volunteering opportunities, start small as well.
But no pressure! High school is all about improving yourself slowly, and you asking this question here already means you are trying to break your bubble, which is brave all by itself. Best of luck!

It’s not too late to join a club. Look at what your school offers. Talk to your teachers, especially ones you like, and ask if they mentor any clubs and maybe they will suggest you join that club.

Can you babysit or pet sit? Those are jobs. Can you volunteer at church? Can you help an elderly neighbor? Can you stay after school and volunteer in some way? Can you volunteer at the middle or primary schools? Do a Google search and look for “local volunteer opportunities under 18.” Search for online volunteer opportunities too. 20+ Virtual Volunteer Opportunities You Can Do From Home - Remote & Online Volunteering

I don’t say this to be harsh, but if you are not doing anything, it’s because you don’t want to. There are MANY colleges that don’t care about clubs or volunteering or jobs. You can probably get into those colleges. But I’m guessing that because you posted here, you’re perhaps aiming a bit higher. Perhaps you are aiming for colleges that care about those things. So if it matters to you, it’s up to you to do something about it.

Shy kids might find it extra hard to get involved, but if your plan is to live on campus away from home, it’s a good idea to get your toes wet by starting small. You can be shy and still work, or join a club, or volunteer. You have to want to be involved more than you want to continue to be alone.

You should look into the RoundPier Summer Immersion program. It’s a free and virtual a junior internship for high school students hosted by a company called RoundPier. It’s great for resume building & networking!
