Extremely low ACT writing score?

I took the March 2016 test and was initially pleased with my results, with a 33 on reading and another 33 on English. However, when I got my writing score back, I was shocked - I got a 16! Now, I don’t think I wrote a stellar essay by any means, but there’s no way I got a 16. My teachers have even mentioned that I write very well. Did anyone else get an out of the ordinary writing score? I know that ACT scores aren’t everything, but will this score hinder my chances when applying to colleges? I’m contemplating spending the $50.00 for a rescore, but I’m not sure it’s worth it.

*April 2016, sorry

It’s totally worth it!

My son took the test in March and his writing scores seemed very low compared to the rest of his scores which were near 30. I think his writing was low 20’s. He is usually a good writer and his english scores were the highest section of the ACT. Fortunately most of the schools he wants to apply to don’t require the writing section of the ACT.

My daughter had a C34 on April ACT with a 23 writing. I am requesting that it be rescored. It’s definitely worth it. If they discover an error I believe they refund your $50 fee. I am sending my request today.

I also got a low score on my essay compared to my composite . How does the rescoring process go? and what if your rescore is lower than it is currently?

FarmerMom is correct that a score change means a refund of the $50.

@angexla ACT will not change your score unless the rescore is higher. You can find more information on the process here: http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/your-scores.html

Thank you @TestRekt will they notify you when if it changes?

The process was such a pain in the butt… I took the February act, got 30 on grammar, 30 on reading, 35 on math, 33 on science. But a 21 on writing, which I practiced a lot for!! When I took the October one i totally BSed it and got a 27. So I went for the hand scoring, they took forever, and they could only let you know through letters. There was an error with sending out my result too, and I didn’t get noticed till today. And my score did not change at all.
