So, my mom has been working with someone else’s social, she filled taxes, and I just now noticed that the social on her W2 and the social on her tax papers are not the same??? So, that confused me. Anyway, I did 1.5 years of community college, and it was all paid for from Financial Aid, because my mom didn’t make over $10,000 a year and didn’t file taxes, so everything was fine. But in 2015 she did file taxes, and I was being honest on FAFSA, but then it wasn’t accepted because her name and the ssn didn’t match, so I took all that info off and re-submitted it without it . I’ve been trying so hard to go back to school, and the school Im dying to go to said, that she is required to file taxes because she makes more than $10,000 a year, which she makes $17,000 now, I told the school she didn’t file, since fafsa wouldnt accept the fake ssn, so they said they need to see her W2, but ive been so scared to show them because they might realize that’s not her ssn, and know that she actually did file taxes. Why is this shit so complicated, I wish I could do things right., Please help.
While you did the right thing by stating that your mom had income and filed taxes. Because your mom used false documents to do this, you are stuck.
Is your mom legally eligible to work in the US?
The right thing to do is:
If your mom does not already have her own taxpayer ID number, she needs to get one asap.
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/taxpayer-identification-numbers-tin#itin
Then she needs to correctly file her taxes (this will greatly help her to legitimize her status in the US) under her own ID number
Unfortunately, you will not receive any actual federal or state aid until you go through the verification process; this means having an IRS transcript, an IRS certificate of non filing or documentation of how you are meeting your day to day expenses (food, clothing and shelter). The sooner that your mom can straighten out her situation, the better off she will be.
If your mom is illegal, she would NOT have a SS number at all in all likelihood. Your FAFSA should have included her income…and instead of a SS number…you should have used all zeros.
In addition, I have to question an employer who would use a SS number without a picture ID to support that the name onnthe SS card match the person he is hiring. My citizen kids had to provide copies of their SS cards…and a picture ID when they were employed.
If your mom is under 65 years old and has a gross income less than $20,000 she is not required to file tax.
I think the issue is the inconsistency in SS numbers.
Even if this is mom’s situation, mom would need a statement of non-filing from the IRS. Because mom used a SSN that was not hers to work and does not have her own ITIN, it will be hard to obtain this.
Thanks for the info
I believe she already has an ITIN, could that replace the SSN?
If she has a ITIN, then she needs to correctly refile her taxes using the ITIN
Use the ITIN for taxes, and 000000000 on the FAFSA.
