--I have an important question regarding FAFSA...--

Iam a US citizen but my mother is illegal and I already filled out where it said 'Social Security' as 000-00-0000 but my mother does not do her taxes so for income tax I put the option where it said that she would not be doing her income tax since she is illegal. I entered her income for the year 2010 and the application is telling me which taxes will she be doing (they are giving me the options of : I did my taxes, I will do my taxes later, I will not do my taxes) in the same page is telling me that she has sufficient money to do income tax. Do she have to file her taxes? She is going to file taxes for her self employment soon so does that have anything to do with filling out FAFSA? Iam confused about this whole situation and I am trying to fill in the FAFSA as soon as possible.

If her income is high enough for her to be required to file taxes then you will not be eligible for financial aid unless she does file taxes.

How do you go about filling out the taxes.

Illegal or not, she’s required to file taxes if she’s in the U.S. and earning money in excess of the (very low) minimum! She needs to apply for a taxpayer ID number…go to irs.gov and search for the instructions. All of the tax forms and info can be found there as well, but she may want to buy some tax software or use a paid tax preparer since she’s self-employed and unfamiliar with U.S. tax laws.
