FAFSA and scholarships

I just finished my FAFSA form and my EFC was really high which was expected. Even with a decent income, the fact of where I live(NY) and family situation(3+ dependents) means im still trying to get the tution down to around 19,000-17,000. I've already recieved some money (around 5,000/yr) purely based on merit(DA to Kelly), and some smaller ones from private.(only around 500) I was ellgible for 2 Selective Scholarships. I was just wondering, even though they said thier need and merit based plus other things, will a high EFC take away greatly from the money i have a chance of recieveing.(Max is around 9,000 combined for both) I'm expecting little to no fed. or state aid.

A few of the selective scholarships consider financial need. As an example, I believe the Herbert Presidential Scholarship takes need into account. Your chances for those will be less due to the EFC. Your chances for those based purely upon merit will not be lessened due to the EFC.

I’m a bit confused though as I don’t think DA scholarships have yet been offered. My DS just received an email from a different school that the decisions were being made early next week. Did you receive the general merit scholarship from IU, the Prestige Scholarship, which is only $4000/year?

Yes, i apologize. I ment DA just to show grades. I recieved the merit(4,000) along with a public, but not indiana based scholarship(1,000). And than the private as i mentioned. And thank you for the reply. I’m just wondering becuase the SS i applied seemed a bit unclear how much need was taken into consideration and how much was based on merit. Just wondering since it would be quite annoying for me to have merit, but not get it based on a high, but unrepresentative EFC from FAFSA.

The presidential scholarship is only for in-state students. IU typically awards quite a few to those who do not get the Wells scholarship after the interview.

But, IU now considers “need” basis for offering Cox Research Scholarship. It is getting very difficult to get a full ride starting this year.

Thank you, I was also hoping to find out if they’ve already determined the DA scholarships listed under the kelly department(not including kelly scholar program). And if not, do you happen to know when it is determined if you’ve recieved it or not? Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley;

It is difficult to get merit scholarships for OOS students other than the automatic ones from IU/Kelley because of IU being a state school and the great size of the incoming classes. Kelley will have seven or eight hundred direct admits, in other words, a bunch of students with good academic credentials to compete with for the direct admit scholarships.

Most people get only subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans, and then only if they have need, and only about 40% at IU are determined to have any need per the common data set. Most state schools don’t offer much aid to out of state students, and IU is like that. Hard to get anything other than the automatic scholarships and Hudson Holland scholarship, if you qualify, which usually means having one parent who is an underrepresented minority and a good hs record and standardized test scores.

Yea, sadly, I understand. Hopefully I’ll be able to apply for more as i progress through my college career with what i expect should be good grades. And I actually did qualify for the The Hudson and Holland Scholarship. If I can get that, should bring the cost to where I comfortable paying and taking out the proper loans.

That is great news for Hudson Holland. The first year you will get six thousand. The last three, you could get eight thousand a year if your gpa stays over 3.7 with the gpa enhancement award of one thousand per semester. Plus one thousand each year from Kelley for being in HHSP, as long as your gpa stays, I think, above 3.4.

Thank you, I have all the grades neccessary for it, and i think my essays and recomendations were up to par. I’m usually not comfortable putting im spanish since it only on my mothers side, but in this case it wasn’t going to be a major factor getting in and with loans and money it was definatly something i had to do. From what i’ve heard its a decent amount of extra stuff, but if i can get all of the nessary GPA insentatives it will be more than worth it.

Sorry to bump the thread but has Kelley already determined its DA scholarships?

My guess is that few, if any, of the selective scholarship recipients have been notified yet. A couple of reasons I say this: DS’s friend was notified about a week-10 days ago that she was going to be interviewed for the Cox Scholarship. DS received notice last week that the faculty committee for his prospective school was meeting last Friday to decide on direct admits and scholarships. We’re waiting with crossed fingers for Hutton and a DA scholarship from SOIC

We attended IU’s NYC event for scholarship recipients a few weeks back. We were told by a representative from Kelley that they do not select scholarship recipients for the add’l scholarships listed on their website until after May 1.

Really? Good to know, thank you. Wish I was able to attend the event, but i wasn’t home at the time.

That’s interesting NJMomma…my D is a direct admit to Kelley and called them last week to inquire about the incoming freshman scholarships and was told the recipients were notified 2 weeks ago! Wonder what is acurate?

I hope they haven’t notified recipients because we haven’t heard anything ;-)

It makes sense that they would wait until May 1 so they know who will be in the incoming class. Wishful thinking perhaps…

I just spoke to Lisa in Kelley admissions, and she did confirm that letters for their direct-admit scholarships were mailed a few weeks ago. She said that if students who have received scholarships decide not to attend IU, there may be some additional offers after May 1, but they’re likely to be minimal. She also said that only about 1% of direct admit students receive scholarships from Kelley. Many of their scholarships are for 4 years and are therefore only awarded every 4 years.
