FAFSA limit of six schools

Anyone running into this dilemma. FAFSA only lets you list six schools. We completed FAFSA, sent it in, it got processed. But now what? I would like to send it to two more schools. But to do that I have to take two schools off the FAFSA.

The folks at FAFSA said that if I did take two schools off then the two schools I took off would not be able to check FAFSA. FAFSA implied that they don?t send anything to the schools, the schools log-in and check on you. They implied that if I took two schools off, those schools could not check my FAFSA application. I?m kind of stuck. What do most people do when applying to more than six schools?

My understanding is that when you get your SAR from FAFSA and everything is correct, you can then go back into FAFSA, remove all 6 schools and add the others, and send it in again. Then all the schools will get the FAFSA.

The FAFSA folks may have thought you meant taking 2 off before you got your SAR.

I copied this from CC, some had the same question earlier:

Updating FAFSA

FAFSA instructions for sending to more than 6 colleges:

Submit FAFSA -- first 6 colleges
Example: Amherst, Bates, Carleton, Duke, Emory, Furman

Wait for SAR - This will be transaction #01

Go online and select "Make Corrections"

Open transaction #01 - delete all 6 college and add new set.
Example: Grinnell, Harvard, Ithaca, Juniata, Knox, Lehigh

Submit - this will be transaction #02

When you get updated info from your taxes, go back to the FAFSA site.

Select "Make Corrections"

Open transaction #01. This is the original SAR that had colleges A,B,C,D,E,F.
Update the financial information with the final numbers from your tax return.
Submit -- this will be transaction #03

Now, open transaction #02. This is the SAR that had colleges G,H,I,J,K,L. It still has the old numbers. Re-enter the updated financial information with the final numbers from your tax return.

Submit -- this is going to be transaction #04.

(If you have more than 12 colleges, adjust instructions accordingly). It is easier to update numbers than add colleges because of the way the web site is set up. It will be also easier in the long run if each FAFSA has a unique set of colleges and you are consistent about maintaining the same sets -- that way you know that every time you need to make a correction to data, you will be doing it to the same number of FAFSA transactions, and you won't have to worry about keeping track of which colleges have received which FAFSA.

Thank you for re-posting this! This is indeed easier!

Administrators, could we make thisa featured discussion? Everyone seems to have the same question.

How long does it take to get the SAR from the first batch of six you submit?

Thanks!

My D has sent in several batches of the FAFSA form over this month, and receiving the SAR took anwhere from 1 to 3 days. I didn't expect such a quick turnaround.

thanks we were kinda freaking out about this

How can I delete before my colleges get them? Which most of them wont upload it till march??

whyivy, i got my SAR back the day after i submitted my fafsa. i think that means the schools on the original form have already been sent the first one and deleting the schools creates a new form.
