FAFSA's Limit of 6 Colleges

I read that you can only submit FAFSA to 6 colleges at a time.

What does that mean?

Is there like a waiting period?

I'm applying to 10 colleges.

I'm wondering how this works...

FAFSA instructions for sending to more than 6 colleges:

Submit FAFSA -- first 6 colleges
Example: Amherst, Bates, Carleton, Duke, Emory, Furman

Wait for SAR - This will be transaction #01

Go online and select "Make Corrections"

Open transaction #01 - delete all 6 college and add new set.
Example: Grinnell, Harvard, Ithaca, Juniata, Knox, Lehigh

Submit - this will be transaction #02

When you get updated info from your taxes, go back to the FAFSA site.

Select "Make Corrections"

Open transaction #01. This is the original SAR that had colleges A,B,C,D,E,F.
Update the financial information with the final numbers from your tax return.
Submit -- this will be transaction #03

Now, open transaction #02. This is the SAR that had colleges G,H,I,J,K,L. It still has the old numbers. Re-enter the updated financial information with the final numbers from your tax return.

Submit -- this is going to be transaction #04.

(If you have more than 12 colleges, adjust instructions accordingly). It is easier to update numbers than add colleges because of the way the web site is set up. It will be also easier in the long run if each FAFSA has a unique set of colleges and you are consistent about maintaining the same sets -- that way you know that every time you need to make a correction to data, you will be doing it to the same number of FAFSA transactions, and you won't have to worry about keeping track of which colleges have received which FAFSA.

Ooh. Thank you!

Tagging this...but what's SAR?

Student Aid Report

I didn't get a DRN number to appear on the second copy of the SAR. Is that normal?

I second sueinphilly; I didn't get a DRN on my first report. I am making the correction for the 2nd one right now.

Also, what's the "transaction" talked about in entomom's post? Is that just metaphorically speaking, or are there actual "transactions" that you can open up (like the different saved applications in Common App)?

Thanks

That is NOT how you do it.

You click on "Add or Delete School Codes" and delete all the codes there, and then add the remaining schools. You do NOT "make corrections to a processed FAFSA". If you delete and add schools that way, the schools you had initially no longer have to ability to access your FAFSA.

So what do I do then?

I already submitted to the first six colleges.

Then I deleted those colleges on my correction page and added six more and submitted.

Now that the second batch has been processed...

What do I do? Do I need to do another one for the first six?

You add or delete a school code...

I see it now. Ah!

But I can only add two more as I had four colleges on the second batch.

How do I provide the updated correction to the first batch then?

We used the corrections feature to delete the first six schools and add for more....if this is incorrect, how do I correct it? I didn't see the add/delete school button in any place other than the corrections mode.

I don't understand the process for adding/deleting schools option. My fafsa has been processed and I have SAR. So do I use the option for correcting a FAFSA or use the add/del option

Hey I did 7 schools and I submitted the first 6 and waited for my SAR. Then I went to add/delete schools and deleted the original 6 and added my final 1. Is that right??? How can I find out if I did it right? I really want to know!

tag for self

From fafsa instructions

If you want information sent to more schools than allowed for on either the paper FAFSA
or online version, there are several ways to make sure all the schools receive your data:
• You can give your Data Release Number (DRN), printed on the upper right-hand corner of the Student Aid Report (SAR) you receive after submitting your FAFSA, to a school you didn't list on your application. The school will use your DRN to get a copy of your application information electronically.
• You can list your original schools on the application, wait for your SAR to arrive in the mail, and then correct the SAR by replacing some or all of the original schools with other schools.
• You can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) and provide your Data Release Number (DRN) to request a change to your SAR to replace some or all of the original schools with other schools. You must receive your SAR before requesting these changes.
• You can add or delete schools on your FAFSA using the Web at
FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Select "Add or delete a School Code" Your PIN is required to access this information.
