Fafsa & Multiple kids...

...I get that each kids needs a fafsa even if every data item is the same, with the exception of kid's name and college list. But, does that mean each fafsa has to be completed independently? In other words, is there a way to input info for Kid #1, save & submit, and then recapture parental financial data for Kid #2's fafsa without having to re-enter all of the data a second time?

Not that I am aware of.

Some tax software can file the FASFA for you.

Really, which tax programs do that?

The student signs and submits the FAFSA and the parent signs b'cos the student is a dependent. So no, unfortunately, it has to be individually for each child - and I share your pain

I don't think there is tax software that files the fafsa. However, there are programs that will print a sheet with some of the info you need to put on the fafsa (earned income, AGI, deferred income from box 12? on your W-2)

Taxactonline does this.

sueinphilly is correct. I saw the prompt in the tax software, and thought it offered to fill out the FAFSA. I went back to it, and all it does is offer to printout the FAFSA worksheet, with some info filled in.

There is tax software that handles the FAFSA form, it uses the tax info to fill the form and/or submits to Dept. of Ed.

Its at https://selfserve.thebenefitbank.com/

There are income restrictions to use the tax software (i.e. make under $56k).

Anyone can use it to fill out a FAFSA form, but the real advantage is if you also use it to do your taxes. If you are just doing FAFSA you might as well just go to FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid

I just finished our FAFSAs tonight. After submitting, on the confirmation page, there was a link that suggested you could start a new FAFSA which would import the parent info from the one just submitted.

I had already saved the info (after typing in twice) on the FAFSA for thing 1, so I didn't get to take advantage. I'd be interested in finding out if this really works.

On the signature page of the FAFSA application, there is a link for completing FAFSA for additional child. On clicking this link, the data from the first child’s application is imported into the second FAFSA application. As per the FAFSA office representative, the application form gives this opportunity to transfer data only once on the signature page.

I’m confused…

I’ve been told that at the end of doing FAFSA for one child, there is a link that you use to do the next child’s FAFSA and then all the duplicate data is populated into those fields for the next child’s FAFSA.

Then you only have to do the “student info” for the next FAFSA.

I plan to wait on the second child’s FAFSA. She’s returning student. Getting it in early is not important as we don’t get any aid that runs out. Thought I’d just wait until a few weeks after taxes so the DRT would be ready. Probably mid-March.

But yeah, that means filling out the whole thing all over again.

I can confirm that it works as advertised. I earlier completed the process for my triplets. After I was done with S1, I was able to immediately move to S2…all the parental info had been already copied and filled in for me. All I had to do was enter the info for S2. After I completed that, same process for DD.

Easy as pie!

I don’t think Bluebayou, who posted this question in 2009, needs the advice any longer.

I know this is an old thread, but I want to thank everybody who’s contributed to it . . . I have two kids in college, was dreading the drudgery of two fafsas, did a web search for “import parental info into fafsa” and found this info which was a great help. Very nice to not have to type the parental data twice!
