FAFSA question 22 , selective service help < 17 years.

DS is 16 and a half years old. The FAFSA online application question 22 enforces the response of "Register me" for all Male applicants and did not allow for the field to be left blank. The Selective Service System can only register those who are at least 17 years and 3 months of age (seems by law). We have twice attempted to correct fafsa by setting to "blank" the response to question 22 but despite that the FAFSA system automatically resets the response to "register me". Per the feedback received from FAFSA customer service the system will automatically register DS when he reaches the appropirate age and its working as designed.

Now here is the crazy part...Colleges are asking DS to submit proof of selective service registration because that is what
is mentioned on FAFSA !!

how do we fix this problem on time and where is the mistake?

Check this thread: <a href=“Selective Service @ FAFSA?? - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1608902-selective-service-fafsa.html</a>

I think “register me” is the correct answer for students under 18, but if that doesn’t work and schools are asking for proof of registration, I’d send them proof of age to show that he is too young to register.

Just call the colleges and explain the situation - tell them that his age is under the hard minimum FAFSA uses to send registrations. Ask if they want a birth certificate. Each school will have its own policy.

^- so I or OP should just kinda ignore FAFSA saying “what to do now” in the SAR and just talk to our college about it?
I thought I was the only one who was trying to select blank but when I check my SAR it is register me.

OP, how did yours go?

@dyoungstudent, yes you would need to email the colleges with your concern. BTW Most colleges are quite aware of the problem on FAFSA though surprisingly FAFSA appears not to be aware!!

do you know what department of college (enrollment, financial, admission,…)?

Financial aid department…even if you do send it to admissions most colleges will help you route it to the correct depart in their college.

Thank you!
I actually just saw that I don’t need to confirm anything b/c it has been verified/okay according to the school’s web portal under FAFSA status.

For a student under the age of 18 leaving question 21 blank would fail to match the Selective Services System. Unable to match it would create a C Code in the ISAR for the college to clear. In the case of a student under 18 years old a copy of the birth certificate will work. If you marked “Register Me” the Selective Services System will hold the registration until the student is within 30 days of their birthday and then register them.
