FAFSA Wrong DOB pin - SSA denies they verify

It's been a terrible day. Incorrectly entered DOB to get FAFSA pin. We can't apply for a new pin until it is rejected and we are already late getting this off. I could shoot myself - that 1 character typo is making us dead in the water is beyond belief. Every website when I google fafsa pin problems says to call the SSA as it is their gig (not FAFSA) and only the SSA can reject or verify.

Ok, I call them (Social Security Agency) - after a 2 hour hold I get a human. They had no clue what I was talking about - none. I asked the person to inquire with their supervisor - nothing, nope, we don't do that and have no idea what you're talking about. How's that for the government being a well oiled machine?? So if you have an error inputting data for the pin, don't even bother calling (as everyone says to do) because they will deny having any association with the fafsa pin process. Looks like my son won't be going to college because I type 09 instead of 08. I have little faith that I'll even receive rejection notification email (which has to happen first to apply for a new pin).

SSA has nothing to do with PIN for a FAFSA, and even if they did, they couldn’t fix it over the phone. If you have incorrect information on you SS account (wrong DOB, wrong spelling of name) you must appear in person with supporting documents to get it corrected. If I’m reading this correctly, it isn’t that your DOB is wrong on your SSN, it’s that you entered it wrong.

Can you just start a new FAFSA with the correct information, then ignore the rejected one?

FAFSA says to call SSA. I was the wrong birth month. If any information I’ve received is correct - which I am starting to doubt - you have to wait for a pin rejection email before you can apply for a new pin.

Oh and you can’t start a new FAFSA - it is entered with his social and that is correct. It was the pop-up window to apply for a pin - for signature that his date of birth had a one character error.

How long will it take to reject? What deadlines are you missing?

SSA does NOT administer FAFSA PINs so far as I know. There is a FAFSA helpline. Call that.

https://pin.ed.gov/pinnotfound.htm</a></p>

Here it says only contact SSA if you think they have the wrong info. The PIN is a FAFSA thing that’s checked against SSA. It also doesn’t say you have to wait for the rejection before applying for a new PIN.

In any case, it looks like it will only take 1-3 days for the process to be rejected. You’re over reacting a bit.

I think there is some confusion here- if the DOB is wrong on your SS id, isn’t that when you would need to deal directly with SSA? And, did you call the Fafsa folks?

Yes, that is correct. SSA doesn’t issue the pin - they verify the information.

Contrary to that web page and verified by FAFSA, you CAN NOT apply for a new pin until the prior request is rejected.

No, I do not believe I’m over reacting as the time spent attempting to correct information and dealing with 2 bureaucracies for hours is over the top really - but that’s my opinion. In today’s online environment, I would expect a simple link to “cancel” the pin request with a simple dropdown for explanation, such as data entry error would be elementary and not waste everyone’s time to verify incorrect information and have a 3 day delay in submitting the FAFSA.

Yes, I have called them twice. Two responses:

Call SSA - which yielded nothing as they deny they verify anything requested from FAFSA

Create a new pin - which does not work until the first request is rejected in 1-3 days.

Both agencies said they can do nothing.

to lookingforward: It is not a change on his ss information - just the data error through fafsa pop-up to apply for pin to submit fafsa.

Over reaction. It’s unlikely there are any deadlines at this point until Feb. 1. Even if the deadline was today, being 3 days late isn’t going to matter.

Ok, that one I’ll give you. It’s been stress-o-rama for weeks with apps, css profile and then this mistake which was totally my fault from burnout. Our concern, is - first come; first serve - less aid being at the tail end means hard choices.

Ebbrat…that “first come first served” is for federally funded work study, SEOG, and Perkins loans. Its because these have limited funding per campus. NONE of those are guaranteed awards anyway.

Hopefully your student has some affordable options on his application list.

Just be patient…you will be able to correct this.

Actually, you might want to have your SON do this. The FAFSA is his.

I get the stress. But all is not lost. The best advice I got was to breathe.

The wording I find is, "If you are sure that the SSN, name, and date of birth used to apply for the PIN are correct, you must contact the SSA to resolve any problems with their records.” But you know it was a recent typo, not an SSA issue. You only need SSA if they are the source of the error.

Print your info, wait for the reject and then restart. The schools won’t give out all money in the next few days. If this is a state school, there may not be much aid, in the first place. If it’s one with a late March notification date for RD, they aren’t giving out all their funds to early admits.

All you will have to do is add the correct PIN. It will be easy! As soon as you get the rejection notice, fix the issue — I have never seen this happen so am not sure what you’ll have to do, but the email will explain it. If it gives you the option to choose your own 4-digit PIN, do that. Then sign the FAFSA with the PIN & submit.

I think the OP needs to correct the birthdate on the PIN application…to the correct one. Right now the BD does not match the one on the SS number…so it needs to be corrected.

If I were a betting woman, I would bet there will be an explanation of what to do on the PIN rejection email from FAFSA.
