Fafsa

Okay...I'm having trouble understanding how to fill out the FAFSA. Do I need a Pin to register? where do I get a Pin? Why do I need to do so much stuff before filling it out? Do I even need to (find ceeb codes, etc.)do it before?

Is this where I start?: https://fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/fotw0809/FFOTWServlet

you need a pin to access the FAFSA. go to pin.ed.gov, fill out the required information and you should receive a pin code via email (if you have an email address--otherwise it will be mailed to you).

you can search for school codes at the fafsa website.

yes that is where you start.

is that where I can get my pin( the site I posted)?

thanks

go to:

fafsa.ed.gov and apply for a PIN, it will take a day or so to get it

Maybe I'm doing something wrong.......

I filled out the information to apply for a PIN number, but it asked me what I wanted the PIN to be as one of the questions. My son did the same. A few days later my son got an email saying his information didn't sync up with the information at the Social Security Administration, and told him to contact SSA to clear up the problem. Rather than doing that first, since it may have just been a typo, he reapplied --this time very careful about making sure everything was correct.

Now, I have never gotten a return email from FAFSA at all, and he hasn't gotten one since he submitted the application the second time. However, they did ask us to choose a PIN, like I said, as one of the questions in the application form. So as far as I know, I do have a PIN -- but I haven't heard anything about it from them.

Is this odd? Are other people getting back emails that confirm their PIN?

^^ No, I didn't get an email confirming my PIN. That would be good though. However, I applied for a PIN during the FAFSA filling process and used the PIN I've selected [both for myself and D] to sign the form. It worked.
After submitting, next day I've received a confirmation that the form has been processed and that a SAR [actually a Web address where you can view it] was sent to my D's email.

Check your junk mail folder, maybe your ISP filtered the email from FAFSA?

No, nothing in the junk mail folder. I'm just going to go ahead and file with the PIN I submitted on the online application. I suppose they'll let me know if it's a problem.

By the way, is there really an advantage to filing in early January rather than later in January? I know you need to get that info in by the earliest deadline, but why January 10, for example, instead of January 20? Is there any real difference?

i set up a pin for my mother and i got the pin instantly on the next screen
