Hello, I am a freshmen in college and was wondering what your opinion on failing a class is. I failed college algebra because I wasn't paying attention and didn't really do the homework, so next semester I set up a schedule in which it forces me to stop procrastinating so much. However, because I failed college algebra I cannot go to pre-calc which is on my schedule currently unless I test out. I know must of the stuff that goes on in class and depending on my final, I'll decide whether to ask for an evaluation or retake. So this is the question; should I retake the class or should I move on to the next level math(via retaking the placement test). If I move on, I suffer a F which will give me a massive GPA drop, but I am still a freshmen and I am not going to graduate school. However if I retake the class, I end up getting the grade replaced with whatever I get for the 2nd time, but because I am a Computer Science major I would not be able to go into my field until I reach Calc 1. So what should I do?

It depends on how confident your are with the material, and how well prepared you are to continue to pre-calc. Even if you passed the placement test, do you think you would be comfortable enough with the material to continue to pre-calc? Since you haven’t developed the focus and study habits you need yet, would it be difficult to do that at the same same time as you are jumping up a level in math? There are questions we cannot answer for you. However, I would go talk to your advisor and see if they can give your more specific information about what would be best for you, your major, and your school.
