Failing a class?

So I currently have the option of taking a C in a 4 credit our class or, failing the class on purpose and retaking it. My college allows freshman to retake a failed course and have the grade replace the original for the cumulative GPA, yet, the original grade still shows on the transcripts and the semester GPA remains the same.

What should I do? The C will really hurt my GPA and I would love to retake the class and go for an A. Do you think grad schools will car if an F appears and is then retaken for a stellar grade?

What are your thoughts?

P.S. There are top notch schools that have this policy including MIT. I would assume top notch schools will turn a blind eye to something like this being that they have the same policy and understand I would have been a freshman and such.

Thanks people!

As a freshman, a C really hurts your GPA-- but by the time you are applying to graduate schools you’ll have a lot of other grades to lessen the weight. Personally, I wouldn’t do it. I failed a class in community college and retook it, same policy, and I got away with it but EVERY time I’ve shown my transcript to someone for work or an internship or anything, they ask me about it and I’d have preferred not to have to compete with that. They seem really impressed with me and then they’re like, “…oh… oh dear… what happened?” and it really kills the mood in an interview. :</p>

I would take the C since you’re just a freshman.

Take the C and make sure it never happens again.
