Failing an AP exam.

Hey guys, so I during my 9th grade year (last school year) I took the Ap Human Geo exam. I found out that I got a 1.I honestly don’t know how I got a 1 when other people who did absolutely nothing to prepare did better than me. Now I am stressed out thinking that I won’t make it to a good college anymore. Is there any way I can come back from this or should I forget it? I really don’t know what to do anymore.

It’s not the end of the world. AP scores have essentially no effect on college admissions, so don’t worry about that- especially your first AP test as a freshman. If you did well in the actual class, you are fine. Forget it, and have a great sophomore year!

First off, having a bad AP score doesn’t count against you. If you did fine in the class, it shouldn’t be a problem. When it comes time to select courses in college, then the credit won’t transfer over.

Spend the next three years going through the motions of high school. Enjoy yourself because the years really fly by! Put the exam score behind you because it doesn’t define who you really are.

Hope this helped and best of luck with high school! You’ll do great things!

first step is to CHILLL. I went through the same thing you’re going through right now. I took the AP Psychology exam and was expecting a 5. I studied so much during the school year and did well in the class (95% overall). Unfortunately, I got a 2 on the exam. I kept it from my family because it’s (supposedly) one of the easiest APs. I felt like a failure until I came onto College Confidential and realized that APs don’t have an impact on whether you get into a good school or not. Once you get into a college, then your AP scores will matter if you want credit for them. BUT it’s also nice to take a fun/easy class so you could take Human Geography again in college. Have you considered a re-score ? There’s more information about re-scores on the College Board website.

Fret not…colleges are much more concerned about your grades in those classes as opposed to the AP tests.

Why is that?

  1. Doing well in a class shows you can learn over the year and work hard over a period of time. That is what they want in college.
  2. Not all HS have many APs.
  3. Many people take AP tests senior year which is too late for admissions

For example, Stanford says:
Students currently enrolled in AP courses are not required to submit AP scores as part of our admission process. AP scores that are reported are acknowledged but rarely play a significant role in the evaluation of an application. Grades earned over the course of a term, or a year, and evaluations from instructors who can comment on classroom engagement provide us with the most detailed insight into a student’s readiness for the academic rigors of Stanford.

Where does this leave you?

  1. It tells you that you cannot place out of those classes in college…you will need to take them in college like many many other people do.
  2. Do not self report your scores

Also think: It is not surprising that a HS freshman did poorly on a college level course.
