Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

I applied to 10 schools for CS phd. I've only heard about Stanford so far :( I got rejected

I'm still waiting on three: Teacher's College, Illinios-Chicago, and Penn State....what could be taking so long??? The suspense is driving me bananas.

Man, you people who are posting stuff along the lines of "I am unable to eat because the pressure of these applications is gnawing away at my insides!" need to ease up a bit. I'm sure life will go on if you dont get accepted to Stanford or MIT or wherever. This may be a facile bit of advice, albeit, but some of you guys are going to get heart attacks if you go on like this.

well, for me, if i don't get an advanced degree, as in a phd, there is no "real" future for me. i will be stuck serving as an assistant to the real deal. maybe i won't get a heart attack, but i will have a broken heart. haha, so sad.

well, here's where i'm applying to (art history):
UCLA - pending
NYU - pending
Columbia - pending
UChicago - pending
Cal - pending
Harvard - pending/fat chance

i'll keep y'all posted!

I'm hardly wasting away. I just wish I could get my responses early so I wouldn't have to travel around so much.

merp,

You aren't one of those that seems to be dying every second that you doN,t get a response from the schools you applied to. I understand that it is annoying and stressful to wait for these things. I was just encouraging everyone to get a grip! Reading CC, you would believe that if you don't get into one of the top 5 schools in your area for a PhD, your life is official a failure. I'm sure everyone will survive if they aren't accepted to Harvard.

I have applied to CMU CS department's Masters in Language Technologies and received the acceptance email last week.

Are there anyone here waiting for the responses from universities of less popularity such those in Montana and Al? I also hope my field, forestry would be less competitive indeed. Although 2 AD have been received, Offer with stipend is still awaiting.
Furthermore, are most of the faculty we apply to reluctant to guarantee the funding?

nyr2120,
I also got into UCLA. I was told about funding in my original email on 2/13 and I received a fellowship. I haven't heard from them since, except with a link to the weekend visit webpage. Did you already book your room and flight?

UCSD - political science - ?
Ohio State - political science - accepted, full funding
Michigan - political science - ?

JYEK,

How much did you spend on applications!? $2000!?

Heh, yea probably something around there jmleadpipe. I got a whole separate credit card for that (USD credit card as opposed to my usual Canadian dollar credit cards to save a bit on the exchange).
What can I say? These things are like hit-and-miss as far as I'm concerned.

My old roommate applied to 40 med schools last fall. O_O

40 med schools!? How many did he get into?

10-20, I think. He got into the one he wanted though, so it worked out. Think total costs were $3000, but that's because med schools have a common joint application.

Wow. That's amazing. My average cost was $125-150 per school, so I just couldn't imagine that. Plus I can't even think of 15 different schools I like, much less 40.

for any of you applying to the CS department at UT-Austin, I talked to a professor today ...

he said decisions have been made on domestic ph.d. applicants
haven't decided on international ph.d. applicants and master applicants

amalee,

i haven't heard from ucla since they called me on 2/10. they told me that i would receive a fellowship but did not get too specific. what is your area? i spoke to scott james, who teaches American politics. he said that i would be hearing from them within the next two weeks but nothing so far.
i booked my flight. i didn't book the room yet because i listed that i would be willing to share a room with one or two people so i am thinking that they might take care of that. we'll see.

good luck on the rest of your schools and please keep me updated about any info you might get from UCLA!

JYEK: i'm in the same boat as you in that i got rejected from BERK CS PHD today :-( it was my dream school. wanted it for years. also, can you tell me when you got into brown? i'm waiting on them :-( also, as for how much you spent on apps, lol, no way! heh, my 11 apps costed exactly $600 and we applied to some same schools :-)
