hi ct999,
Sorry about Berkeley. Berkeley wasn't my top choice so I didn't really feel too bad. Though my top choice (CMU) should be rejecting me any day now.

I got a message from a prof at Brown early on (Feb 6) saying they recommended my admission. But I only just got the official admission yesterday.

Regarding the cost of applications, I think my estimate includes all the tests and score reports. Because of the timing, I had to request GRE general and GRE subject test scores separately for each school. I also had to take and send my TOEFL scores. That really added to the cost.

I'm leaving in an hour for Caltech ME. How did your weekend go? Were you offered admission while you were there?

Supposedly some of our interviews will be with multiple students and one prof. What the hell is that???

Out of curiousity, who would you work with there? If I remember right, we have similar research interests, but I wasn't able to find anyone in mat sci who did that kind of work.

Out of curiosity, did you guys contact profs at the universities that you applied to? How did you make your applications "stand out"? I mean, you would now be working with a supervisor, right? How do you find a supervisor? This is going to be crazy next year :S

nyr2021,
I haven't heard from them at all really, and they seem a little disorganized. I haven't booked a flight because I'm really hoping for UCSD, which is a few days earlier, and I could only fly to Cali once.
I'll let you know if I hear anything. You can PM if you are interested in the details of my funding.

The weekend went pretty well. We had some lab tours and met with faculty...standard stuff.

Nope, we weren't offered admission while we were there. They basically told us that we were all students they'd like to admit, but they wanted to make sure we were a good fit for the program. I got an e-mail notifying me of my acceptance late last night.

All my faculty meetings were one on one, but they weren't really "interviews". The professors just discussed their research, and I asked them questions. Having to do that with multiple students at a time certainly isn't as nice, but it shouldn't be too awkward.

I am most interested in Dr. Johnson and Dr. Greer. Have you looked into their research?

I hope you have a good time in Pasadena. Let me know how it goes.

So, Harvard is finally heard. Congrats. That is quite a nice acceptance list you have there. Interesting: UC Riverside? My sister went there, but I don't remember them having a reputation for PhD's, but this was 20+ years ago.
