Fall 2010 transfer student! UIUC, UW-Madison, UM-Twin Cities

I am a Sophmore Computer Science major attending UW-River Falls looking to transfer in Fall of 10'.

I have created an excel-based PDF 2 year schedule that details my performance thus far at college: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/721838/2_Year_Plan.pdf . I have a 3.86GPA with a speculated 62 credits by time of graduation.

Unfortunately, I did quite poorly in High School. I received a GPA of 2.35, and a Rank of 334/441. I went to a difficult high school in Minnesota and I was caught up on the drama, the environment, and the attitude towards my education. After sliding-by my senior year, I received a 27 on my ACT and enrolled into the University of River Falls-Wisconsin.

I didn't mix well with high school, but I am doing quite well at River Falls. I have changed my work ethic due to my changes of lifestyle and environment. I can handle 19 credits and can balance academic life and social life comfortably.

I have registered to a study abroad traveling classroom in the Spring of 2010. The brief information can be found here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/721838/ITCFlier.jpg

I didn't have any major extra curricular activities (besides many self-motivated ones) in High School. Now, in college, I work for the IT department and participate in the Chess Club.

I'm thinking of either staying a Computer Science major, or switching to Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering. I'd like to go to graduate school after my undergraduate.

[Questions]

1) I'd like to apply as a transfer student to UIUC, U of M-twin cities, and Madison. What do you think my chances are at each respectively?
2) Anything I should be doing to prepare for my transfer?

Any other comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,

Computer sci is a tough field so talk about what motivates you to keep on going.
My advice is really get into depth when they ask you why this college? and why transfer?
Also another piece of advice is to talk about which specific areas in comp sci intrests you and how you could apply that to finding/choosing a career. People, especially admission committees are drawn to ppl who will succeed, so without being too much of a braggart, show command of the areas of computer science. The admissons committe are bound to have a good number of professors and so this is a must. You can’t afford to leave doubt in their minds.

My understanding is that you don’t have to submit your high school transcript or ACT scores if you have over 30 college credits at your current institution (at least for Minnesota). You should have no problem transferring from UW-RF given your current GPA. Apply early. The earlier you send your application, the more likely you are to get in. You’ll have to apply to IT for admission. Typically you’re automatically evaluated for CLA if IT rejects you. If you get into CLA, then all you have to do is transfer within the University which is much easier. Hope this helps!

It seems like you applied early, have you heard back yet? and if so, when?

I am not sure about the other 2 schools, but as a student currently in UMN, I think you have got a decent shot. Go for it. Good luck.
