Another day without a rejection…would be nicer to get an acceptance letter but at least I still have a chance

hellojan i know you are a big fan of on-campus living, and if i was without child/ baby daddy i would be all for it. i am just worried about going full time and having two kids (ages 2 and 4) in a new city etc etc.

but i did apply for full time status and for on-campus housing (family housing), so we will see. of course all of this is only happening in my hypotheitcal reality where i get accepted tomorrow in a flurry of emails and phone calls. that is how i choose to view the future at this point.

@James, the apartments are pretty nice and one can choose from various PREMIUM locations within Manhattan with panoramic views of the city at certain complexes. The apartments are maintained by a 3rd party “student housing” company. Which means that everyone in the buildings either go to NYU, or various schools in the city, which means theres alot of parties going on within the building for sure. Not that I party too much, but that would be a plus in my book and an opportunity to network with other NY students. If anything those that plan to live in NY should really consider sticking three people in a 1 bedroom to save more money. You know what that means, Bunk Beds! However, 500+ bucks a month for three people would be a lifesaver in terms of cash flow, besides more money to do other things.

However, since the reality is that most GS’rs will have no choice but to pursue off-campus housing, one caveat in particular is that it is extremely difficult to find roommates that fit your personality. Even best friends can turn into worst enemies because of a clash in living habits. I consider myself a veteran in situations like this in my life since I have lived with groups of friends in apartments four times, and most of the time there is usually one person that is really lazy and never cleans up after themselves, or even worse, forgets to flush the toilet! And once you guys move in, things can get ugly if you find that your personalities dont “gel” quite well.

People that choose to live on their own will find it very expensive to live in Manhattan, and be forced to live in questionable neighborhoods ( i.e Bronx, Harlem, parts of Brooklyn near the bridges. ) that will threaten your safety. Id rather be safe and pay a higher bill than live in those areas.

Furthermore, this may be obvious for some, but in extreme situations, one or more roommates could possibly “bail-out,” and leave you hanging with the bills, so, IF ACCEPTED and going off campus , make sure you have plenty of back-up cash ( as close to 8 months worth of funds and an emergency credit card) in your bank account that will cover the ENTIRE cost for eight months of living in the apartment. If you dont do this, you will find it very painful going to school and living at the same time. You will most likely end up dropping out of school simply because you dont have a place to stay. I know because this has happened to me before. Thats why it is important to find people that are actually going to the same school as you are to reduce this unfortunate and very real possibility. Before, anyone comes here they should probably consider working over time during the summer to have a solid nest-egg ready.

If I am accepted, I will be travelling more than 3600 miles to attend. That, combined with the fact I applied ED, will probable get me on-campus housing right? Or is it so scarce I might not?

Also, emailed the admissions officer that previously wrote me, and she told me that, given as I have to make various arrangements to move to the US (Including the student visa which, as you all can imagine, the embassy likes to take its time to grant), she would ask the admissions committee for an expedite decision on my application. So great! Hope that will get me my decision at least a little bit faster.

8 months of living expenses for my fam of four is like 30,000, btw. dont think i will have that in a lump sum anytime soon.

CuNyc: Did she give any hint at all to when the decisions would go out?

And now we have the whole weekend without any hope of getting the call. Both relaxing and aggravating

“…you should hear from our offices within the next few weeks…”
very vague…

With the number of views this thread alone has you would expect that at least one other person to have gotten admitted. Weird

@CuNyu: I had everything (but the GSAE) in by ~Feb 7. I received an email the day before the deadline saying that I was missing a test score and a letter of rec. I wasn’t missing a letter so I called admissions. They checked my file and said that everything (but the test score) was in there and to disregard the email.

@invic: Yeah, my official app submission was Jan 27th, Essay and transcripts were in before Feb 7th. So I’m guessing (and hoping, because if not, I’m gonna receive a rejection letter during the summer) that my application got pushed way to the bottom of the pile because I didn’t take the GSAE until March 27th, rendering my application incomplete until then. So I’m just here to cheer on your acceptances!

@JIG I think taking the GSAE in March27 definitely delayed your review process, but I believe that you will still get a response by May 1st, better yet an acceptance…since you did apply before the deadline…let’s hope so :)…(have faith my dear James…have faith )

Thanks for the info @random. Bunk beds would allow for so many activities! (Step Brothers reference for those who don’t know. I don’t want to come off weirder than I already am!)

I probably account for half of those views @baxter!

Thanks for always being so positive @invictvs!

Anytime!..positivity brings forth positive things :-D. … 1+1=2. Brings more … 1+(-1)=0… can’t afford to be negative …it only brings you down…proven even by a simple mathematical explanation ;)

Well I really hope being positive pays off and we all get in soon

Cheers to THAT my dear Baxter…cheers to that…! :)

I would like to put an emphasis on soon because it would be nice to get it before I have a nervous breakdown LOL

Lol…I hear you Baxter…with this rollercoaster of emotions our nervous system must be at its toll…our poor motor cortex is running at full throttle, soon enough some of us won’t have a frontal lobe left…lol!

I suppose they won’t be calling anybody on the weekend… boo. Just checking in to send good happy vibes all around.

So I decided to do a little (and I mean zero effort!) investigating into what @RandomAdmit was told:

“I also wnet to an information session at the beginning of February with Kari Razdow, and I remember her explaining that they were not going to start reviewing applications until a week or two after the deadline due to a couple of seminars that were out of state etc etc. So they are at least going to be a week or two behind everything i think.”

So on the GS website I noticed that they have 2 Science Po info sessions today: one in DC & one in Seattle. These are going to be conducted by “GS admissions managers.” Not coincidently of course, there are GSAEs being taken in the same cities at the same hotels today as well (plus one GSAE in Los Angeles tomorrow). There are no more out of state info sessions and/or GSAEs scheduled after this weekend. I’m guessing that the admissions managers will be back in NYC by Monday/Tuesday to start hammering out decisions. Makes enough sense to be the reason for the delay. Credit to @Random for the info! Hopefully this turns out to be a grrrrrreat week for us! Good vibes @Juniper!
