I had a named scholarship my first year at GS. They sponsored a very fancy dinner over at the Low rotunda and the folks who provided the money for the scholarships were in attendance. Sadly, my patron had passed away a few months prior to that event so we never had an opportunity to meet.

Hey Studies12,

as an international student I have difficulties finding financial support. You are talking about a named scholarship. Could you please elaborate what exactly this is? Does it mean that you got a scholarship from a private person? and if yes where did you find this person and how did you apply?

This would help so much right now! Cheerio

Hi StuKing, greetings from another international student!

I’m guessing that Studies12 received one of the Named Institutional Scholarships outlined at the end of this webpage [Institutional Scholarships | General Studies](http://www.gs.columbia.edu/institutional-scholarships)

As far as I’ve heard, each NIS originates from a donation that a philanthropist has allocated to guarantee the representation of a particular kind of student at Columbia. GS has to select the NIS recipient in accordance with the criteria set by the philanthropist, most commonly such as socioeconomic status (eg 1st generation college student) or academic specialization (eg joint pursuit of poetics and physics). The NIS differs from the generic scholarships that GS distributes from its own funds based on its evaluation of your academic merit.

GS doesn’t publish the list of NIS available or actually awarded each year. You don’t actually have to apply separately for a NIS. As long as you’ve submitted the GS New Student Scholarship Application and Planned Enrollment Form, GS will consider you for BOTH the generic scholarships and NIS if your personal circumstances match the requirements of one of the private donors.

Hope this helps. Others here might have further information to contribute. Have you received any news about your financial aid package yet? I still haven’t heard since I gained access to the Financial Aid site only late last week to submit the Planned Enrollment Form.

I was selected to receive a named scholarship as an art history major from a woman who graduated from Columbia University with a degree from the same department. I do not know what stipulations she had in place for this scholarship other than the art history requirement. I did not complete a particular form to receive this funding, just the GS scholarship application.

NB: some named scholarships replace existing institutional grants with money from the benefactor, or benefactor’s trust, rather than adding to one’s aid package. That is to say, in some cases very generous donations have zero net effect on what it is that YOU owe.

Such was the case with my scholarship. I had a great dinner in the Low rotunda with the very sweet daughter of my deceased benefactor. I added the scholarship credential to my resume. End of story.

Lurker who joined to let you know that I got the call about an hour ago. I submitted my application mid-April. They requested my spring grades and I provided them earlier this month. Good luck to those who are still waiting!

how were you able to submit so late???

and congrats jpg!!!

GS accepts apps up until June 1st for regular decision fall admissions. (Note that Columbia College, the traditional college at Columbia University, has a much earlier deadline (Jan 1 or something like that).

@campaigner yea i know but he said June 15th!!how is that possible??

@ brandi thats what i am wondering too… I applied May 1 and still haven’t heard anything…

Do you think my application is rejected if i did not hear anything from them by now?

Wow that is a long time! I submitted mine on the same day as the deadline! But I saw a few people get accepted who waited months so do not get discouraged!

@ brandi I did not get an interview yet, however i heard that having an interview is a good sign! Hopefully things will go well for you!

if you dont mind me asking, what were your stats?
And how are you a nontraditional student?

@pucca I completed hs in 2007 and returned to a community college in 2011 hs grades BLAH! CC my gpa is 3.93…took. the GS admissions exam (they do not give scores)

But plenty of people get accepted without interviews!
I have been going insane! People say if you can log onto FA your in! I cannot log in! I been checking my email repeatedly!!

The deadline is June 1st but if you have part 1 of the application done before then they will accept late docs until June 15th. To those who haven’t heard anything, I have a friend with better stats than mine and he still waiting. There really is no rhyme or reason to it all.

Also to anyone endlessly checking, I wasn’t able to log into FA for a day or two after and didn’t receive an email until after they called me. They called me at 5:17 pm so they hang around late. Furthermore, I realized that I did not address W’s on my transcript and a couple of other small things in the essay and I didn’t get an interview.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me. I am no expert but I met with admissions managers a bunch and probably asked them every question in the book. Good luck to all!

I am loosing it!! three days since interview

Brandi, many applicants do not hear anything for a week or two (sometimes more) after their interview. The fact that they interviewed you is a good sign; it means that they are interested enough to want to know more about you. There is a person, earlier in this thread I believe, who felt uncertain about how his interview went, waited a few weeks, and got in. I know the wait is rough but give it time.

A few weeks! And then got in? Wow that is a relief
