I worked in the gym for about two and a half years. Basically, you can expect an experience similar to that of a big, urban gym - but with certain parts of that gym closed off for different varsity sports. There are a few out of the ordinary things about it:

It’s literally underground, buried under the north end of campus.

The top level of the gym, closest to the campus surface, is equipped with a running loop. Columbia’s president, Lee Bollinger, likes to run on the loop on snowy days.

All of the Columbia’s trophies are kept in the lobby. In my time I was lucky enough to see and hold the Ivy League championship golf and track trophies. I’d love to set eyes on the baseball trophy.

It’s the only part of the university where neighborhood folks are able to pay for full access. As such, it’s the only part of campus where students, staff, faculty, and neighborhood residents regularly interact all at once.

It’s where Obama took most of his showers.

So just when I agreed that taking out private loans for Columbia would be worth it, a total devastation hits me in the form of denial of my private loan applications. It appears that my average credit is not enough to qualify for any loans, and I literally have no one to co-sign for me since my parents are not from the US, do not live here, and don’t make any money. I am just gonna drown my sorrow in the wine that I have left in the fridge and see what I can think of tomorrow. Tonight just seems like the end of the world…

Denbal87 I felt the same way, but I was able to find a very generous and loving friend who co-signed a loan for me. Don’t give up just yet! This is all part of the battle!

I do have a question for everyone though… I sent in my acceptance a month ago, my deposit hasn’t been cashed yet and I have my UNI up and running, but in the past month circumstances have changed and I am getting married in the fall and would like to defer that acceptance for a year. How do I do this without risking them rescinding my acceptance? Thanks in advance!

I was able to defer no problem. I’d just give them a call asap and tell them what’s up. They allow deferment for one year with no issues whatsoever.

My UNI isn’t up and running yet, however. I’m assuming that’s because I am deferring. Anybody else deferring and have their UNI?

I’m in the exact same boat. I made amortization schedules,3 year disbursement plans, 14 year payback plans, budget spreadsheets, projected earnings and sources to back up my numbers. I been taking all that info into local credit unions and banks to no avail.

However, I’m not giving up. Just gotta get thru paying for this undergrad, I think at the graduate level “graduate plus loans” would be paying this shortfall?. I might be wrong on that last point. lll pM you later; maybe we can figure this out.

Thanks for your support, everyone!
@ I8 I had a talk with Skip Bailey again, and we looked at some of the options of going part time. We also talked about credit building so that next year I would have a better chance of getting a loan. Also, the PI of the lab where I volunteer said she can help me out with a generous stipend, and possibly can hire me in the fall. So I am going to attend, just not full-time as I planned.

As for grad school, I plan to do a PhD in biomedical sciences, for which most school do not charge tuition + pay you a stipend of something like 30K. So yeah, I might be in a slightly different boat than you. What are you majoring in?

Awww, our little thread is losing steam and being taken over by the RD thread. That’s ok, I’m channeling all my joyous internet rambling over to Storybook anyway. See you guys in a couple of weeks!
