Fall 2014 Applicants Unite!

@artsyfartsy96 Good luck to you too!

@TransferAppFIT my first priority anxiety is getting accepted, then i’ll worry about the credits haha… i havent heard anything about the difficulty of getting credits approved, but i hope its not too bad

i think we’re all so obsessed because they wait so long to tell us!! i wish they would do a rolling notification since i completed my app in november/december

and good luck to everyone!!

@phoebebuffay Same lol I only took basic courses at my current college only to make sure that they would transfer to FIT lol and I agree the wait is ridiculous.

Hey guys! My name is Amber and I applied for a fine arts major in the fall of 2014. I got an email saying I was accepted on March 3rd. I applied two weeks before the extended deadline so I don’t think its based on when you applied. Acceptance letters and packets should be sent out by April 1st (terrible date, I think) so keep an eye out!

@asmarpat congratulations!!! did you apply as a freshman? i think somewhere it said that freshman with advanced standing/high gpa are being notified early

Does anyone know if they count international baccalaureate students as advanced standing? Still waiting for decision ahhhh so nervous

Has anyone been accepted? I’m still waiting, this is taking forever.

@artsyfartsy96 still waiting lol hopefully in 2-3 weeks they would start sending decisions.

Hi all! I applied to FIT a couple days before the extended deadline, and submitted my essay for the FMM right on February 1st, I believe. Does anyone know for the business school what the statistics are?

I have a 3.2 and an ACT of 29, and was also wondering how much they take the essay into account/ if anyone would mind reading it!!! Best of luck to everyone.

@nikkikundanmal i also applied for fmm… ive tried to find acceptance rates for that specific major but i havent seen them posted anywhere. the school has a total rate of about 45% but that probably varies depending on how popular a major is (fmm is one of their most popular ones i think)

i’ve heard for business majors the essay is really important alongside grades since they dont look at test scores. im hoping they really look at the essay since my gpa might not be high enough to set me apart (3.4 at another college)

Are there any alumni or current FIT students on this page that would be willing to read my essay? so nervous

@TransferAppFIT yes! I heard some are sent at the end of the month.

Hey @nikkikundanmal I’m an FMM applicant too! I would say for business in general, anywhere around a 3.0 is good! For FMM, it maybe a bit higher due to competition of the major. Awesome ACT score, but unfortunately in your case FIT does not look at test scores. If anything, they’ll glance at your math scores, but it’s not a heavy admissions factor.

How did you do in your math classes? Are you enrolled in honors courses at your school? How strong was your essay? These are some things that can give you a big advantage towards admittance! Although I’m only an applicant, I will be more than happy to read your essay and give you feedback. :)

@phoebebuffay yup i applied as a freshman! I heard that the acceptance emails were sent out randomly but who knows it could be. My GPA is relatively high at a 3.8 (4.0 according to collegeboard). Just remember that acceptance letters will be sent out by April 1st, but I have read that sometimes they get to you as late as May so keep a close eye on your mailbox!

No one hears in May unless perhaps you were wait listed. The letter are sent on or before April 1st.

I heard we will be hearing within 2 weeks

Does anyone know how many people get accepted for the FMM major?

@artsyfartsy96 I am an overall B math student! and my act math score was in the 30s i believe! a 30 or 31! and I am taking 3 APs this year, took one last year! And have taken 3 honors since freshman year- two of which were in math :)

heres my essay for anyone to read and critique! Ive obviously already submitted it so I cant change it now but feedback is still always nice for future reference!

FIT ESSAY
As a child, I eagerly looked forward to Bring Your Daughter To Work Day. On this day, most kids sit in an empty conference room and draw pictures, or perhaps their dad’s assistant entertains them while he is busy answering his emails. Growing up, both my parents worked in the apparel industry in the heart of Manhattan, so my experience with this day consisted of accurately matching Pantone colors to their intended textiles, alongside my mother. Additionally, I would walk across 32nd street to visit my dad’s office where he would give me the seemingly important task of sorting swatches. To do so, I would round up the other children in the office to help, giving them different guidelines for sorting. It was our own little workshop; though, the other children did not seem to enjoy it as much as I did. I could not fathom how they were not exhilarated by the beautiful colors and patterns. With this, I discovered that fashion is in my blood.
As I grew older, I envisioned a clothing line designed entirely by myself. I began to sketch the designs that I wanted in my collection. When I showed my parents, they commended my fashion intuition. They were amazed at my ability to predict upcoming trends. However, they strongly encouraged me to partake in a plethora of activities in order to be well- rounded. Being young, I naturally obliged.
Though I was invested in other extracurricular activities, my passion for apparel never subsided. It rekindled every time I went shopping. I was inspired by the racks of beautiful clothing; however, my real desire to assert my creative innovations in the fashion world derived from challenges of being extremely petite. Shopping evolved from an enjoyable leisure activity into a difficult and rather strenuous experience. To this day, I have a very difficult time finding correctly-sized clothing that matches my age and style. I often resort to browsing the kid’s section. This led me to think about all the other small-built women who must encounter the same dilemma. There are many clothing stores that cater to plus sized women, but few that provide fashionable styles for the opposite extremity. With this discovery, I became determined to create a line dedicated to petite women. I thought of a name, a tag line, and dreamt about my creation coming to life, everyday. But I was missing one key component to success- experience.
My father works in fashion manufacturing, but wanted to extend his business and create his own fashion line. When I expressed that I still wanted to pursue fashion, he was impressed with my determination. He gave me the opportunity to intern for his company, and assigned me to work on the clothing line project. This allowed me to gain important knowledge of line development and how the design process works. Simultaneously, I discovered that success in the world of fashion requires an understanding of business. In order to gain some experience in this regard, I decided to apply for an internship at a private investment firm. I knew that obtaining the job was something of a challenge, but I longed for opportunities that would further my financial knowledge. To my surprise, my resume and multiple interviews sufficed; I got the job. I am excited to expand my understanding of finance, marketing, and distribution, beginning in February.
When researching colleges, I struggled to find an advanced fashion program that incorporated business. Most majors I came across were strictly “fashion design”, and required a portfolio. I was ecstatic to learn that FIT has an entire school dedicated to business, and offers a curriculum that caters to such personal preferences. The Fashion Merchandising Management major perfectly combines fashion and business. Having exposure and experience with each, I believe that I am an ideal candidate for the program. More so, my passion is undying. I am intrigued by many areas of FIT. I hope to utilize the opportunities to study abroad in other fashion capitals, and eventually earn a degree in entrepreneurship to help me fulfill my clothing line dream. To this day, fashion is very relevant in my household. Our garage is filled with racks of swatches and clothing, and there are sample garments lying all over the living room. This is what I know as home. Attending any other college would just be an education, but the Fashion Institute of Technology would be a home.

Great essay - loved it!

Very nice essay! I’m sure you will do well!
