The admission takes into account every transferable college credits you took in the past, including high school dual credits if applicable.

Hey!

I am currently attending University of Houston. Freshman year.
1st semester GPA is a 3.8, won’t go lower then that the second semester.
- Engineering 2) Natural Sciences
Intended major: ME, PE or Physics
EC’s: Members of: American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Habitat for Humanity.
Also started and operate an education program for underprivileged kids in a third world country.
Recommendations: Have one from my English teacher but thats it for now. Will try and get one next semester.

My high school records absolutely sucks. All around, ECs and grades. Although I do have a decent SAT(1920), don’t know if that counts.

Thanks!

If you have not seen this program yet you might find it interesting

I don’t know why but this school is often overlooked, and some of its degrees are very close to engineering and physics.

Damnlol1: GPA is awesome, engineering interest seems evident in outer projects! I’d say you have an excellent chance. Could you get your last two recommendation letters from UT grads perhaps? 2/3 of mine were from grads that recommended me for the university. Keep up the great work!

danichus - I have some friends who transferred from UTSA and from JCs to UT CS, and their stats were not as impressive as yours.

Chalkster - your stats are very similar to mine when I applied to transfer from ACC to UT, and I got my acceptance notice (COLA- government) the first few days they went out. I also had a lot of HS ECs, varsity sports, year at a New England prep school (post grad) and part-time jobs, etc. Needed to get to a Texas public university because I was legacied for my dad’s veterans benefits so no tuition at Texas schools. UT admissions considers ECs going back five years, and you should list these on your resume as well as ApplyTexas app. Per a UT admissions officer, UT accepts 300-400 transfers from ACC each year. And, UT’s ApplyTexas app specifically asks if you are a member of PTK. Sorry for blabbing on and on, but I think you have a good chance.

Chances for me? Thanks for all help!

Hey guys! I was wondering if someone could chance me?

Current College- UT Dallas (Business Honors)
Current GPA- 3.69

Credit Hours Completed:27
Credit Hours Completed after Spring 2014 semester:41
College Applied for: Mccombs(First Choice)/Economics(COLA)
List of Extracurriculars
MIS Club, Entrepreneurship Club, Environnemental Club, and i also work a part time job.
Essay topics and quality: Pretty good Essays
Letters of recommendation: 2 letters. One is the professor of one of my honors classes and another is from the associate dean of the business school.

OK, so I’m not an expert or anything like that. There are some posters on here like YaYa and Deegee who know a lot more about these things. I’m just going by what I read during the last couple of months, and what some friends have told me, but here goes.

Hornhopeful - i think you are in a good shape, probably almost a lock. You still need to have good essays because UT admissions reads all essays. UT also reviews each resume. I think whether you get into COLA or UGS will depend on the number of core classes that you have credit for. If you’re missing a bunch of core classes but have a good GPA then probably UGS.

Armin - three of my friends got into McCombs external transfer with similar stats (one UTSA, one A&M, one ACC). You have to have your indicator classes, and each of my friends also finished six hours govt, history and English. Can’t say if that is a reason they got in, or just a coincidence. One friend didn’t get in to McCombs because he took the wrong calculus sequence (business instead of math department).

Thanks so much for the quick answer redwing! That really calms my nerves. Any other replies on my chances? YaYa? Deegee?

Thanks a lot redwing, I did complete the right indicator courses but im taking one of the indicator courses in the spring of 2014. Because i dont have that completed by the time i applying, does it change my chances because that class is in progress? And Is there anyone else that could chance me? Thanks.

Armin, most of my friends at ACC transferred in the Fall. Most to Texas State, but several to UT. Even had one go to Notre Dame, one to Rice and one to Vanderbilt. I ended waiting a semester because I dropped most of my courses my first semester because of a situation I got into. Long story, and I can’t say it was worth it, but at least I lived. Anyway, based on what I saw, I think it is easier to transfer to UT in the Fall. I don’t think McCombs even accepts Spring transfers. I think your situation is better for Fall transfer because UT accepts more apps and because you have more time to get your transcript in. Not as much time between Fall and spring. Basically I think you have a good chance.

YaYa, I have looked into that college a bit and i was thinking about using it as my backup instead of CNS. Thanks for the suggestion!

DeeGee, thanks! Real confidence booster! I currently only know one UT grad and thats my sister, but I will try and get LORs from other UT grads.

Oh, I also have another question about a requirement. Can math 408C (needed for calculus readiness) at UT be substituted for Calculus 1 and 2?

Is a 3.5 with 30 hours good enough for UGS?? I wanted CNS but I don’t think ill get into that so quickly, so UGS is my first choice. I have about 500+ community hours & I can get An awesome LOR. My essays can be pretty solid, too! Thanks!

I also had one small question about transfer credits that I’m hopeful someone can answer. When I entered in my courses on the ATE site, most of them came back with a course listing at UT. However, when I entered in 2 of my honors-level poly sci courses, it just said something to the effect of “gov. 3 hrs”. Would these 2 courses still count towards my transfer Gpa? Thanks for the help.

Thoughts anyone?

woops double post

damnlol1: I actually asked this question to the mccombs evaluation department and they said no. You must either have K and L together or C and D together. 408C is technically calculus 1.5 so it does not complete cal 2. 408D is technically calculus 1.5-3. You can’t mix and match either. Its kind of stupid because the C & D sequence includes Calculus 3 :/

That is very stupid.
So I can’t take C and L to meet the requirement but if I take K and L which is calc 1 and 2 I’d meet the requirement?
Sorry, just a bit confused. Thanks armin

CileyMyrus, I think you would have a good chance with a 3.5, good ECs, LORs and essays. Here are the average GPAs from 2011. (I saved this data from a UT link but I can’t find the link itself.) Average GPA for COLA, CNS and UGS are about the same, and admit rates to COLA and CNS are higher than UGS. But it is two year old stat.

Liberal Arts applied 2045 admitted 910 44.50% 3.58
Natural Sciences applied 1587 admit 774 48.77% 3.5
Undergraduate Studies applied 879 admitted 299 34.02% 3.58
