Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

OK, found the link.

[Transfer Times - Spring 2011 | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/counselors/jcc/transfer-times/spring2011#P91_6556)

(click on How Grade Point Average Affects Transfer Admission).

And here’s a neat spreadsheet sekrim posted on the Spring 2014 CC thread. It shows the stats for Spring 2014 transfers who posted.
http://sekrim.com/documents/spreadsheets/UT%20Austin%20Spring%202014%20Transfer.pdf

Would anyone be so kind in helping me determine a transfer GPA that UT will use?
I have the courses that transfer and my grades. I’ve tried looking at the link:

[Computing GPA | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/transfer/admission/factors/gpa)

But I don’t quite understand it… Would anyone mind helping me?

For most transfer apps, your UT transfer GPA will be the same as the GPA on your transcripts. The only time I’ve seen different is when the student took developmental classes. Development classes don’t count as transfer credit and or part of your GPA. Classes like College Algebra or P.E. will count for transfer GPA and transfer credit but won’t count towards the UT degree plan. If your school doesn’t list courses by + or - (A-, B+ etc.) on transcripts, then UT takes the grade as it is on your transcript (A = 4.0, B=3.0, etc.). If your school uses +/- grades, then it will still be counted the same (A-, B+ etc) by UT. Every college credit class you have taken counts towards your transfer GPA. A lot of kids have lower transfer GPAs because of Bs or Cs in dual credit classes when in high school.

Hello I am planning to transfer into UT can anyone chance me?

Current school: UTSA
Current GPA: 3.4(hopefully going to go up)
College applied to: COLA
Major: Social Work or Classical Archaeology
Extra curriculars: 100+ hours of volunteering, member of several clubs and organizations, and was a manager of a small business while in high school.

They continue accepting people around May correct? I already have enough hours but I want them to see my grades from spring 2014 as well.

danichus

You are definitively making it into the department. I’ll see you in the Fall!

@oatman

thanks!

I feel like UT still plays the number game in all honesty, I don’t want to be pretentious but I actually ended my semester with a 4.0 and man I was surprised, but now I feel a little less worried about essays, but I’m still a bit apprehensive.

The required topic statement of purpose is the purpose of transferring am I correct? Or is it about the field you’re going into?

Also, I don’t think I need to write the extenuating circumstances essay because I feel like that one will be a load of BS :frowning: I don’t really have an amazing story.

Would somebody please chance me?

Stats:
3.75 GPA (4.0 last two semesters)
48 transferable hours (59 by spring)
minority
Completed Calc 1, (Calc 2 in progress in the spring)
All A’s on other Math classes
No ECS, no LoR’s

I also have a question about foreign language credits…

I currently have 48 hours at my local cc in Texas and will have 59 by the end of the spring. I do not have any foreign language credits though but I could take the placement next month exam and I’m confident I will pass and get all 16 credits before the deadline.

Now i’m afraid taking the CLEP exam might be unnecessary. I took 2 years of german in high school. I also worry that If I plan on transferring internally later on (i’m still undecided between CS and finance) then I would be over the limit of the 90 credits max to transfer internally.

Also, does the “language deficiency” hurt admission decisions? Will my chances of getting accepted into the CNS or liberal arts school decrease?

1) Current College: North Lake College, formerly North Central Texas College
2) Current GPA: 4.0 (in Phi Theta Kappa)
3) Probable total GPA after Spring Semester (in May): 4.0
4) First Choice Major/College: Civil Engineering
5) Second Choice Major/College: Undeclared/Undergraduate Studies (just so I can increase my chances of just getting in overall to UT)
6) Courses completed: 31 total hours so far
Calculus 1,2, and 3 (2413, 2414, 2415) 12 hours
English 1 (1301) 3 hours
National government (2305) 3 hours
History from Medieval to 1865 and from 1865 to present (1301 and 1302) 6 hours
General Psychology (2301) 3 hours
General biology (1408) 4 hours
I have 13 more course hours on the way from the upcoming spring term and 3 hours of AP credit my last school didn’t have a course equivalency for. So 16 more hours of transferable credit. My upcoming classes are
University Physics 1 (2425) 4 hours
English 2 (1302) 3 hours
Texas Government (2306) 3 hours
Music Appreciation (1306) 3 hours
My AP credit of for human geography for 3 hours
Hopefully a full 47 hours when spring is done
7)Extracurricular Activities/Recommendations/Essays: I had a lot going on in high school-football team captain, all-district player, academic all-state,Duke TIP, Vanderbilt PAVE, I founded a Secular student alliance chapter, i did a few dozens community service hours, i have a 33 ACT and 1900 SAT, and I was AP Scholar with honor/I’m hoping to get three from my last three teachers (Calculus 3, National government, and english 1)/I did all three essays and I’d honestly say they’re 9/10 or 10/10. Really proud of them.
8) Maybe I can appeal to the cultural demographic as well, since I’m an atheist and a dirty liberal living in Texas. I’m also part Cherokee and am in the process of getting my Nation membership. I doubt any of that really matters, but you never know.

I just sent in my application and I’m looking for a little solace and comfort. Four months is a long time to wait for a decision if you’re stressed the whole time. Let me know what the other posters think. Thank you!

Does community service have a big impact on their decision making?

Chuck616: You didn’t provide what college you are applying for. The reason this is important is because even though you have an excellent GPA, I see that you are lacking in Extra C’s and letters of rec. That is a big dent in your application and UT admits well rounded students, not just students who focus on grades alone.

Thatguy95: Your stats look great! Keep up the great work. I think you are a strong candidate for UT Austin.

Saborak: Community service DOES have impact for UT Austin. Even if it doesn’t alone get you accepted, it makes your application unique and shows that you are a well rounded student in their eyes. I suggest everyone participates in major specific clubs, volunteers for organizations, and has letters of recs written. It can only HELP you, NOT hurt you.

lalabear95, I wrote you a post on your profile in case you didn’t see that.

@DeeGeeErbear I’m applying to CNS (computer science) and college of liberal arts as a second choice. I will try to get a recommendation letter from one of my professors, and as far as EC’s I haven’t really had the time due to work and trying to make ends meet. Is that something I could add into my essay?

chuck616: Thanks for replying! CNS will focus mainly on your grades, so you’re better off there. Making all A’s is your best bet in your math/science courses is what really matters to them. If you work full time, it’s good to include that in your extra curriculums. I did not realize that you work. You can explain to the committee why you lack EC’s, but for CNS I honestly think it would be a waste of your time. I do, however, strongly recommend that you find people to write you recommendations. Those I believe make certain students unique and they get a better feel from someone else what kind of person you are. A boss from your job or supervisor would be an excellent choice, and could explain that you work full time and are a hard worker… etc.

@danichus

The essay regarding the “Statement of Purpose”, is designed for you to explain your reasons as to why you are applying to either The University of Texas, or the department. In my essay to the CS department, I wrote about my passion for programming, stuff I’ve made, and how I wanted to get into an elite department within UT so that I could change the world and impact other people’s lives with what I create.

The University looks for leadership and passion, and it shows. You won’t find many people on campus that are passive people, nearly everyone that I’ve met possesses leadership qualities. Take this into account when you submit your essay.

How should I approach the resume? Really confused on this.

@Damnlol1 They have some sample resumes here: [Resume | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/transfer/admission/resume)

Make sure to put any type of extra curricular in the last 5 years, jobs, community service, awards, and recommendations, and of course the schools you’ve attended with the GPA received.

Somebody chance me please?

Attempting to transfer into McCombs.

Currently attending Austin Community College. I am going on my fourth semester at ACC, where I have completed 48 hours through three semesters (will have 62 after Spring 2014 semester). My GPA is a 4.0. McCombs requires Micro and Macroeconomics, Calc I and II. I have completed all three, except for Calc II (which I am taking in Spring 2014).

I work 40 hours weekly waiting tables for a Pappas Co. restaurant. Because I work many hours, I don’t have the time for extra curricular’s.

High School:
Graduated 2012 with a 3.83 GPA, was roughly in the top 17%. SAT was a 1660 (only took it once). Was a varsity football starter for three years, and also a varsity baseball starter for two years. Was in National Honor Society, and a Best Buddies Club (helping kids with special needs). Awarded our athletic department four year scholarship. Roughly 100 hours of community service throughout high school.

I am going to get letters of recommendation from my high school varsity football coach/athletic director, one of my ACC professors, and also from my GM at work.

I believe the mean GPA for acceptance into McCombs was a 3.87. So I realize I have an advantage with grades, but I have a few concerns.

 1. Transferring with 62 hours. Seems like a lot, and after talking with a UT adviser, it seems they prefer people with less hours.
 2. Taking Calc II in the spring semester, meaning I will apply without the course completed. Calc II is a McCombs requirement, so I felt like because I haven’t completed the course it could push back my acceptance. I believe McCombs also accepts only a certain amount of students (based on availability), so would my situation put me at a disadvantage?

Thank you to all who respond.

Hi I am applying for transfer fall 2014 from the university of Arkansas. After my First semester of college I completed 14 hours +(3 credits from AP Psychology exam which i received a 4 on) credit hours=17 hours. I ended this semester with a 3.57 GPA
English(3 credits)-A
Chemistry(3 credits)-B
Spanish(3 Credits)-B
College Algebra(3 Credits)-A
University Seminar(1 Credit)-A
Chemistry Lab(1 Credit)-A
I plan on taking these courses this semester and complete 16 hours
English(3 credits)
Biology(3 credits)
Spanish(3 credits)
Statistics(3 Credits)
Biology Lab(1 Credit)
Sociology(3 Credits)
I have written 2 of the 3 essays
I have 4 letters of recommendations being sent and lots of EC’s
I also just completed Winter Term GOVT 2305 through Dallas Community College and Received an A
So I have 36 transfer hours for UT (33 Not including AP Credit)

I am applying for COLA Psychology and UGS Undeclared
Chance me?

Also, If anyone knows should i notify UT about my AP credit before they make an admission decision? I did not count the AP hours in my # of completed hours on the Apply Texas Application because i was not sure how this worked.

OK, same warnings as before - I’m just going by my own experience and my friends’ experiences.

Deeprep - top GPA and great resume. I think you’re close to a lock, even for McCombs. Your number of hours is not an issue until start approaching 90. Should be OK on indicator calculus as long as it is on your Spring transcript.
[McCombs School of Business | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/transfer/admission/majors/business)

I also attended ACC, which transfers 300-400 students per year to UT.

Txgirl - I think you have a very good chance. Avg for COLA transfer in past few years in 3.58 GPA. It doesn’t matter much but I don’t think your 1 hour frosh seminar will transfer. Also, College Algebra will transfer but will not satisfy COLA math requirements. Your algebra will be an elective. You will also need a resume for last five year. UT likes ECs, work, etc.
