Fall 2015 Admissions thread

Hi there! I got the e-mail last night that I was accepted, and I couldn’t be happier.
I am a 24-year-old woman from Denmark. Our school system is a bit different so I don’t have an actual GPA. I took the toefl test this December and since high school I have been working with different things, traveling and volunteering with AFS, which is a program for exchange students around the world. I was an exchange student in Minnesota in 2007 where I had a very high GPA and was an honor student. I am really surprised that I got in, but I think it was a combination of my recommendations, my essay and my overall life experience, since my grades from Denmark wasn’t the best. I have taken some college/high school courses to improve my grades since I graduated in 2011 and I finished a private school course in Singing this winter.

My major is gonna be Political Science and I hope to one day work at the UN to end human trafficking. This I wrote about in the optional essay.
I, as well as BROntasaurus, completed my application just a few minutes before deadline and all my transcripts were in by the 20th of March.
I was sure that my grades weren’t good enough.

Congratulations to everyone who received an acceptance! It seems as though everyone who received an email yesterday got in. There seems to be a trend that acceptances are sent out before rejections, so it isn’t looking so good for all of us who are waiting to receive notice today. I called the office of undergraduate admissions yesterday and was told to expect an email by 5:00 pm eastern time. In addition to applying to GS, I applied to NYU Stern School of Business and received an email today informing me of my rejection. I am pretty bummed as it is and if I get rejected from GS today too, it only makes matters worse. This entire transfer process has been a roller coaster ride. Congratulations to all people who got in already and good luck to all people who are still waiting !!

Congrats all! Stay positive those who are still waiting. Here are my stats:

Age: 31
Sex: Male
Professional Background: I’ve been a practicing accountant (CPA) for a major firm for the past 10 years specializing in mergers and acquisitions
GPA/Academic Background: Completed a Bachelors degree in 2005 w/ 3.5 GPA

I’m pursuing a second bachelors degree given the complete change in field. Ultimately, I’d like to be a teacher or work in research.

Good luck @astrocpa ! Have you heard back from GS yet?? 10 years experience as a CPA will definitely resonate with the admissions committee. I’ll also post my stats…

Hey guys, I’m new to the forums here. I applied for Columbia GS early admission and still haven’t heard anything. All my application materials were sent in by February 25. I just called today and asked if I’ll be receiving my decision today and the lady on the phone said no, I should be receiving a decision next week. I’m assuming, based on reading past threads, she means a rejection letter in my inbox sent through regular mail. Does anyone know if this really means bad news? I’m also an international applicant.

@671242491 I’m in the same boat as you ! Just got off the phone with GS and was told the same thing. I assume we did not get in. Plenty of acceptances have already been sent out and, what it seems like to me, rejections will be sent out next week via USPS. This sucks ! I was so looking forward to getting an acceptance email. The lady on the phone also told me that my application is still under review, whatever that means. At this point, its May 1st and we still haven’t heard anything back yet. My guess is that it isn’t looking too good for us and, unless you get an email very soon, a rejection letter is on its way. Although every part of me is saying that I didn’t get in, I still want to remain positive. Im checking my email every 10 seconds hoping to get that highly anticipated acceptance email. Lets see what happens… Good luck. fingers crossed

@TedNicholas I’m assuming that maybe she meant the mailed decisions will be coming next week? Did she mention if they’re still sending e-mails? Do they send e-mails to rejected applicants?

@TedNicholas from the looks of your status, I don’t think you’ll be rejected. You seem to have a stellar academic background AND you were gainfully employed while you weren’t in school. Unless you have bad recommendations and a horrible essay–and I doubt that you do–there shouldn’t be any reason as to why they should reject you. Also, a thing to consider, is being wait-listed. They could be at odds with you (and I don’t get why they should be) and your application could be pushed to be reviewed for the “Regular Decisions” admission instead. Either way, stay positive

For all those who got accepted ( @nuwhere , @patpat946 , @willstay , @astrocpa , @nina1991 ), do you guys know when the “Acceptance Reply Form” is due?

Thank you for the boost in moral @lexxym !! I appreciate the kind words and subsequently feel better about this entire process. I put well over 100 hours into writing my essay and have solid recommendations from a UC-Berkeley graduate (professor of mine) and a Boston University graduate (my academic advisor). Also, CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptance! What is your intended major?? As for @671242491 , The lady on the phone told me that, regardless of acceptance/rejection, you should expect to receive both an email and notice in the mail. Whether its the email before the mail or vice versa, that is yet to be seen.

Thanks @TedNicholas ! At this point, my best guess is that your application was at the bottom of the stack and they’re just about to get to it! Lol. My intended major is Biology, and I’m hoping to become a physical therapist one day as I am already a Pilates instructor and working to become a Yoga instructor later on. My goal is to eventually merge these two disciplines and apply them into physical therapy

I called today and was told “the admissions committee will be in touch early next week to discuss your current spring term”

WHAT?! I am so confused. I have no idea what that even meand in terms of acceptance/rejection.

Been looking forward to finding out today and still have to wait.

@lexxym Sounds like a great plan, very interesting! Are you looking to open your own private practice later on? You seem determined. I’m sure you will succeed at Columbia and in your career.

Hey, I wasn’t planning on posting here but the anticipation is killing me! I just got off the phone with the office of admissions and they told me my application is still under review, and that I should call back on Monday. Did anyone have a similar experience? Any insight into what this means regarding my acceptance/rejection?

Thanks!

@powersthatb I had the same thing happen. They did not give me any concrete information other than “someone will be in touch early next week”

@powersthatb Same thing here. If the applications are truly still under review then we may have a chance. Otherwise, based on what I’ve read from other threads, the longer the wait, the sadder the outcome. I’m just wondering - has anyone been rejected yet? Or do they release acceptances and rejections as batches?

I’m trying to stay away from other threads and keep a positive outlook. My last document was not received until 4/15 so hopefully they are truly still reviewing it.

Yeah Ive been told my application is still under review and that I should call them back on monday.

@lexxym it should be returned “no later than 3 weeks from the date of receipt”, as stated in the form.

@lexxym it says at the bottom of the form that it’s due “no later than three weeks from the date of receipt to secure
your place for the fall 2015 semester”. Not sure if that means receipt of the email or the FedEx package (I assume a hard copy of the form will be included). I think it’s a safe bet to send it in as early as possible. I also read that they need to have received the acceptance reply form at least two weeks prior to our APS (Academic Planning Session) date.

Hey guys, looks like they’re still sending acceptance e-mails today. I didn’t get one, but someone on the other thread said they got an acceptance e-mail today. Makes me worry more, considering they told me I won’t be receiving a decision today. Is today the final day for acceptances?
