Fall 2016 Transfer Thread / Chance Me!

I’m guessing you guys will hear back after June 3.

Seriously, Northeastern’s inefficiency to send out admission notifications at a reasonably adequate time just shows the type of institution it is. Honestly, like there’s no logical reason why NYU, who had a similar April 1 deadline, can send a responses within 3-4 weeks while Northeastern still hasn’t. That makes me not even want to pursue going to Northeastern like honestly. It’s whatever though, I’m just annoyed because it would make it even worse if I didn’t get in because they wanted two months to tell me I didn’t get in? I just want to know so that I can stop worrying about it and move on with my life. And reading the comments of students who’ve gotten accepted but already enrolled at other schools shows the flaw in Northeastern’s system. No wonder the surrounding Boston area schools are better.

Wouldn’t form an opinion about Northeastern just based on how they notify the prospects…

I mean, obviously there’s a flaw in their admission practices, which overall doesn’t boost the reputation of the school, but rather, hinders it.

Not really. They have a limited number of spots. Their system seems to work just fine for them. They roll out one wave, wait for some responses, roll out another, wait, and then roll out decisions again.

@BusinessTransfer I agree completely. There is no justifiable reason they are taking longer than all 6 other schools I applied to. I heard from everywhere else before early May and got so frustrated with NEU I’ve just given it up and committed to Tulane, who notified me back in MARCH. Every time I’ve called them they said they aren’t even finished reading applications and are SO secretive for some reason about the process. It really does say something about how the school runs their processes. Very frustrating.

@JavaCoco not how it works with them, a rep on the phone told me its completely random, that people get accepted and denied in every single admission wave they send out. They still haven’t finished reading applications.

.

Hey guys, I really really really hope you guys can help me out. I am having a hugely difficult time deciding between NE and USC. At first I was 100% sure I wanted to commit to USC, but now I’m wondering… What do you guys think?

Here’s my understanding thus far

USC - Higher ranked #23 in USA, better weather/no winters, in Los Angeles, better sports, better social life, more well-known and a big brand name school.

NE - Lower ranked but still top 50 at #47, Co-op, cheaper, on the rise… However, I’m not sure if it will ever rise to USC’s ranking.

While NE has a great co-op program… USC has a great Trojan family and links/connections that set up internships, interviews, etc. for me with successful Trojan alumni…

My main concern is simply the fact that USC is so expensive while NE is about 10k cheaper
I can afford both but I just think both are good schools and am having trouble deciding whether or not the extra money is worth it to upgrade from an already great school (NE) to USC.

@Sxsxjx Ah, California! the weather is seriously an argument to make! On the other hand, always consider the actual neighborhoods you’ll be in. LA is its own world, spread out and only to be traveled by car (there is some public trans, but…let’s be real here you are gonna need a car). It’s West Coast Central, basically, and if the beachy/relaxed/slightly superficial thing is you, go for it. I love CA, seriously. I grew up there

But if you like a faster track, seasons (you will miss them believe me) and being able to walk all over the place, Boston is better. It also houses a ton of other great colleges.

When it comes to prestige, well. I do firmly believe that your education is what you make out of it. Sure Harvard can guarantee a lot, but there are still people who achieve nothing after getting their degree. If you use the co-op experience to its fullest, you will have a better all-round education with experience as well, which is very valuable. NEU is better for that. LA has its own benefits, and if you are at all interested in film or careers found in Silicon Valley, go there. But Boston has a lot of research going on, as well as a stellar hospital and imo it’s growing in relevance.

So in the end it depends on what type of person you are and what your major is. Think of the opportunities you as an individual can gain, and perhaps where you’d like to live your life for the next few years. Because the two are so many miles away from each other, I do think that’s important.

But $10k ain’t a small difference. Remember to factor in cost of living! I remember seeing that rent seemed sliiightly cheaper in LA, but driving is the bane of any person’s existence ever there. Seriously. Worst traffic ever, takes ages to get anywhere, and then parking. PARKING. Just realize that much of life will be spent in your car…

(but then the MBTA is basically an antique relic of old American history that we still use for whatever reason)

@Sxsxjx Think about it this way while taking ranks and name recognition out of the argument including money at the moment, ask yourself some of these questions:

What college has more to offer for my major?

Which location offers more to help progress me in my field? Does population size matter? Diversity? Class to student ratio?

Has the school offered a positive investment for past students who attended?

Is it a place I can see myself living for the next few years of my life?

If NEU and USC overlap each other in some of the example questions honestly you should pick out things that set them a part. But to be frank, it sounds as if you really want USC but you’re second guessing yourself, why? You said NEU is cheaper but then you said that you still can afford it. If you’re looking for a good investment then consider what you just said in your post. USC alumni network is really cultivated and passionate. Not saying NEU’s alumni network is disengaged by all means but my point is that there’s a sense of “my brother’s keeper” so I know why you stated that reasoning. It does help you toward your career by knowing more people that can help you get the job of your dreams. NEU’s approach to networking, in my opinion, comes from its Co-Op and off campus opportunities which can help you land a job offer before graduation. But in reality, college is what you make it. Never forget that. Don’t focus on rank trust me because someone from a state university majoring in engineering can get the same job at Google as someone applying from MIT.Getting a great job and investment from college depends on you. Your decision should focus on what does your program offer you at each college but most of all, how involved is that program with providing information to help you succeed. It can even get down to the basics to HELP you make the ultimate decision, which climate do you prefer? social life? distance from home? I hope I helped you

@Saw777 haha we have the exact same thoughts! Really curious where OP is from tbh…LA does sound beautiful and exotic in a way (especially if you are from MA), but of course reality is def more mundane. That being said, LA has faaar more diversity, and with it, more culture in a way.

(I miss Korea Town)

(and the Mexican burrito shacks)

@Sxsxjx I don’t have as much input as the others, but it seems to me that the only thing holding you back and making you second guess yourself is the price. don’t get me wrong, 10k is a lot of money, but if it were my decision i would say go for it! if USC is a place you feel is right for you and excites you and you can also afford it, definitely go for it. this sounds cliché, but you really do only live once! not only that, but I know a few too many people who chose their college based on money rather than what they truly wanted and ended up regretting it. best of luck with your decision

@aimingforthesky As always XD wait…I didn’t even realize that you made that comment before I did! I believe you were watching me. Anyway, I felt as if you hit the nail on something that I didn’t go far enough into which was the transportation and each city on the whole. You may can afford the school but can you afford a car (insurance, payments, gas etc) ? Public transportation isn’t something you can ignore in light of that. A counter argument is that you can easily find a friend with a car so yeah but still, nothing like your own stuff. Weather is a make or break if you don’t enjoy snow. More diversity and culture will help exponentially depending on the major. Not to forget, food choices let’s be honest.

I want to go to LA someday

I just believe @Sxsxjx is second guessing. You can tell from the post asking which one should I choose that USC is already the top pick and though it’s more expensive, it’s still affordable. I agree with @ocrowley . Regret will pick at you for next few years if you know USC is the place for you but you went elsewhere. Nothing is stopping you but you based on your post. Go with your heart while making an informed decision. You will end up happier, trust me.

@aimingforthesky @Saw777 @ocrowley
Honestly, thank you guys very much haha. I am from Hawaii but born in CA, spent a year last year in New York so I’m not some pure West coast kid. I am super grateful for your guys responses… I truly do want to go to USC and was second guessing due to monetary reasons, but you’re right guys, if I go to NEU for cheaper tuition while I truly want to be at USC I will regret it always. I just got done touring USC and just truly loved it in every sense. Thanks guys your input means more than you think!

@Sxsxjx Well in that case, LA it is! I think you’ll enjoy it. CA has beautiful nature, tons of people from different places, and the best burritos you will ever find (yes this is important). Just remember: the water is cold almost all year, the further inland you go the higher the temperature, invest in anything car because you’ll need it (insurance etc) and make sure to read all the parking signs! Those are my tips =)

And yea, regret is the worst feeling ever. Even if you end up disliking USC, you’ll know that you tried it. That really makes a difference.

predictions for the date of the next wave of decisions??

hopefully tomorrow @bluea4251
