FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

is that the same buttmuncher who made that racist comment?
How many buttmunchers can there be…

Just for the information for future applicants. I was waitlisted for mechanical engineering despite having a 4.0 GPA for all classes, completing all the pre-reqs, and having exceptional ECs (subjectively). However, I will not have the 2 strongly recommended courses finished by Spring 2017 (auto cad and statics), and that was likely the cause of being waitlisted. That being said, I would say admission to an engineering major is extremely unlikely if the strongly recommended courses are not completed, no matter how strong the application may be. I am also willing to conclude that essays do not have much of a pull for engineering majors, as my essays were subjectively strong as well. For impacted majors, there is almost this area passed the critical point of GPA and prereqs where acceptances, denials, and waitlists seem to be random. Lastly, if you really want to get into UCLA, don’t apply for engineering, my friend had several pre-reqs missing for psychology and was still accepted.

@jl5678 This is the Facebook page for UCLA FALL 2017 TRANSFER: https://m.face book.com/groups/1353818731377511

Everyone join and congrats!

Do any of you know what the Cal Alumni Association scholarship is?
I got an email inviting me to apply

@misskelseyk I called their admissions department. The phone hours are 1-4pm PST. I asked why and the lady asked what my GPA was and then when I said 3.8 she asked for my application ID. She then told me what she thought the reason was.

@amunroeee I called their admissions department. It was (310) 825-3101. Just sit through all of the prerecorded messages and it will connect you to a counselor. As far as I know UCLA is one of the only schools who does this, or at least in my experience.

@LynAmmo You guys are the CLASS OF 2019 too, not just the 2017 transfer group!

Any LA natives having a hard time choosing between UCLA and Cal?

Also is the event on the 13th the date that we begin to sign up for our classes or is that until a later date?

@ericbeige go to the 5/13 event because it may help you decide between the two. No, it is not the day to sign up for classes. You are thinking of the Transfer orientation, which you need to sign up for on 6/8. https://www.admission.ucla.edu/NewBruins/Orientation_Transfer.htm

@cmdchavezz they’re asking me for their tax returns, W-2s, a form that describes their expenses, things like that.

@Happy2Help Oh, that makes sense. Thank you!

@cmdchavezz My family is having to fill out the extra document think too and its a pain…you have to go to the IRS website and request certain documents and it takes up to 20 days to even receive them its so annoying

@SunandSound. What class where you planning on taking for summer. I’m in the same boat as I’m trying to attend session C so I can’t get accustomed to UCLA a little better instead of showing up for fall and trying to settle in.

@racerbabe11 I called UCLA yesterday and they said we don’t have to request the IRS stuff because they noticed that it was difficult for us to get it in a timely manner, so the lady I talked to said to just upload the tax returns and W-2s and stuff.

Who else is going to MEChA de UCLA 14th Annual Transfer Raza Day?

@LynAmmo So you were able to check your aid after you called?

No I have to finish submitting all this information. Instead of ordering it from the IRS we just submit tax returns, W-2s, etc.

What a pain. Thanks!

@FutureHaasBear yes but you still need a high GPA because it’s an impacted major.

Congrats new Bruins!!! Here are a few words of advise from me to you.

  1. The quarter system is tough, but it’s not the monster people make it out to be. But that said, 10 weeks does not give you time to fall behind and catch up. So you have to be organized and stay on your grind.

  2. Find people in your classes to collaborate with on study materials. Many professors give you study guides for exams. If you can answer the questions on the guide, the test is usually fairly easy. The trick is that the study guide has a lot, a lot of questions to get through. So if you find a group of people to work together, you can break up the work and get through it much faster.

  3. The people you want to hang out with, may not be the same people you study with. That’s ok.

  4. Go to your professors office hours. Go to your TA’s office hours. Make sure these people know you by name and by face. Make sure they know you’re serious and that you’re trying. Grades are often subjective, and if you’re on the bubble, they’ll likely bump you up if they know you and know you’re working.

  5. TA’s often have more impact on your grade than professors. You may take issue with that, but it’s a fact of ucla life. Don’t piss off your TA.

  6. Go to at least 1 football game and do the tailgate thing. It’s fun! I met some great current and former students during my first tailgate and they are still friends today.

  7. GO TO CLASS. I know that sounds basic, but seriously, go to class! People who attend classes, typically do well. They are actually in class to absorb the materials, and the professors like them better. You think you’re not missed in a class of 150? Trust and believe, the professor notices.

  8. Enjoy your time at UCLA!! Be amazing!
