Hi! I just wanted to make a general thread for students who are looking to transfer to a new school next fall as I don’t know anyone who is/has transferred and deadlines are just about 2 months away! I hope this can be a space for all of us to ask questions, vent, and share outcomes when the time comes, regardless of what schools we are applying to.
I suppose I’ll introduce myself first. I’m a current freshman at Boston University studying sociology and history. I’m looking to transfer because I’m not loving the environment here, the university’s clear focus on programs that will get them higher rankings (STEM, Business), and the lack of an education studies program. I’m applying to 9 schools: Georgetown, Barnard, Brown, Bryn Mawr, William and Mary, Tufts, UPenn, Wellesley, and Wesleyan. I realize this list is all reaches, but since I’m just a freshman and not 100% certain I want to leave and am willing to give it more time unless I was able to get into one of these amazing schools!
I just happened upon this thread and thought it would be the perfect place to ask a question I had been wondering about for a while! I’m also applying to 9 different schools: Bard, Clark University, Lewis & Clark, University of Vermont, Macalester, Skidmore, St. Olaf, University of Puget-Sound and University of Minnesota-Duluth.
I’ve been trying to figure out if most colleges have a general date by when they want a reply on whether you are enrolling or not? For example, Macalester wants to have a reply 2 weeks after an acceptance and UVM 10 days afterwards. I’m having trouble determining for other colleges. And if they do have certain dates they want a reply by, what’s the best way to time sending in applications? It seems like a bit of a balancing act!
@codecat That’s a great list! I know quite a few people at most of those schools and they seem to really enjoy it! If there’s no specific date on their website, I’d assume the school will tell you when you have to commit when they send your acceptance (I know early/mid June is a common deadline). That’s the tricky thing about the transfer process, there is no national commitment day. From what I’ve read on other threads one school’s acceptance deadline can be before you even hear back from another school, so you either have to ask for an extension or just commit and possibly lose your deposit if you end up getting into a preferred school. If the school has rolling admissions, I’d assume the earlier you send it in the better.
Hey! I did two years at NYU before deciding to take time off from classes for a service year. My application list is still fluctuating a lot, but I’m definitely aiming for reach schools as well since my interest in transferring is largely based in academic interests that I can’t explore at my current school. I figure if I don’t get accepted anywhere and finish at NYU, though, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
On that note, I’m definitely applying at Brandeis, Brown, Vassar, and Wesleyan!
I am a sophomore at a small public university in Massachusetts and I am a newly minted Political Science Major. I have a 3.68 GPA, and applied to 7 schools:
→ Northeastern (Politics, Philosophy and Economics)
→ BU (PoliSci)
→ BC (PoliSci)
→ SUNY Albany (Public Policy)
→ UMass Amherst (PoliSci)
→ UMass Lowell (PoliSci)
→ George Washington University (Political Communication)
I am a freshman at a top 40 LAC with a GPA of 3.83. My goal is to pursue a better political science/business program as well as more diversity/political diversity. My list is mostly reaches due to staying at my current school being a definite option.
With that being said I am currently applying to William and Mary, Boston College, Emory, Vanderbilt, Wake, Cornell, Colgate, Swarthmore, Georgetown and UVA
It’s great to have a transfer thread! I will bookmark this and hope that it stays active. I’ll try to answer questions about transferring as well.
I am a rising junior at a CCC with a 4.0 GPA. Applying for business/finance to these schools (favorite to least favorite): UPenn, Cornell, NYU, UVA, UMich, Carnegie, Notre Dame, Emory, BC, USC, UNC, Madison. I know quite a bit about these schools (salary, admissions rates, decision date etc…), so please feel free to ask.
Currently a freshman at Skidmore College with a 4.0 GPA, and hoping to transfer somewhere with a better chemistry/chemical engineering program with more research labs/facilities, as well as more diversity (I’ve found Skidmore’s political scene to be very one-note). Currently applying to mostly reaches — Bates, Brown, Cornell, Georgetown, Northwestern, Pomona, and Yale — since I love Skidmore despite its flaws and am having a grand ol’ time here.
@UNCISMYDREAM The only thing I know is that the average transfer GPA for Juniors is 3.71. https://admissions.unc.edu/apply/class-profile-2/
I often find that schools don’t provide too much information about transfer students. I don’t think I’ve seen proper class profiles for any of the schools that I’ve researched.
@UNCISMYDREAM It’s mainly due to the business transfer process. Basically, if I get accepted as a transfer, I will have to internally transfer to the business school. Unfortunately, the internal transfer is not guaranteed and I could be stuck for a while. As a result, I rather transfer to the other schools, because I will be able to directly enter the business program.
Hey y’all! Current sophomore honors at Clemson looking to transfer next fall.
GPA: 4.0 HS GPA 3.5 ACT 27
I’m applying to
University of Miami and Tulane for sure and possibly NYU, BU and Northwestern
Safeties are ASU and CU Boulder
@Vincent1997 , this isn’t a general rule, no. It depends very much on the university itself and their policies. Some examples of universities that are known to look favorably, as opposed to “neutrally”, at CC students are Swarthmore, Amherst, and Stanford. This doesn’t, in any way, diminish the fact that they’re extremely competitive. Students from CC’s can have amazing records just as much as a 4-year students can, so you’ll still be up against very qualified people.
@Vincent1997 Unless it is a school that provides automatic admission to local community college students, there is no preference between 4-year transfers and CC transfers.
