My daughter has a class that goes until a little after 4PM on Fridays. She is looking to book a trip home for the break in October, and she is looking to book a late bus, sometime after 4:30 or so. My question is, do professors ever cancel these late classes before break, and if so, when do they usually inform the students?

If they don't usually cancel these classes and there's a bus that leaves at 4:15, can she just leave class a little early that day to catch the bus? The next later bus is another 2 hours later and would get her home well after midnight.

My daughter would often skip those classes or just leave half an hour early. Last year she came home Fri before Thanksgiving because we were going away. She was so worried about missing 2 days of classes, turned out they were cancelled anyway. As long as your daughter doesn't have a prelim scheduled, she should be fine. We are going away again this Thanksgiving. I booked the trip after my daughter looked at her prelim schedule.

a lot of times people will be assigned papers to do before or after thxgiving...it is unwise to leave early just to be with family when you have ****loads of work to do...

By now every one has their syllabi.. if they have a paper due that they need to work on due right before fall or thanksgiving break, or a prelim right right before or after then they shouldnt leave early. however, it usually is ok even in classes where they take attendance to miss one or two classes per semester, and professors expect students to miss class before a break. on thanksgiving break, profs often cancel tuesday and weds morning classes because they know students wont be there.

so have your child look at when their stuff is due then make the plans.

For the record, it is actually a no-no for faculty to cancel class before a break, and they may be reported to the Dean of Faculty and their College Dean for doing so.

On the other hand, I doubt any student would actually complain.

It's school policy....classes are rarely canceled...but the professor might have a "fun" lecture and not teach.

For instance...I had a Wednesday morning class before Thanksgiving and the prof gave a lecture on how a Thanksgiving meal is digested (it was a nutrition class).
