is anyone going to the fall orientation for transfer students? if so, what is your major? i think it would be a cool idea if some of us could meet up so we don't feel so lost. my major is astronomy.

Hey!
I too am a transfer student and will also be attending the Fall Orientation. My major is Computer Science.
I agree. We should seriously try to meet up!

I am! My major is Advertising. That’d be cool!

are you guys worried about getting into the classes/times you want? i know i am, lol.

me too!! I wish I could get my classes now not have to wait until the week before classes… and yes lets all meet up :)

Yup! Most of the classes I come across are waitlisted.I am freaking out at the idea of what my fall schedule is gonna look like!

When I went to my orientation last week they said that people in fall orientation still get a lot of their desired classes because a lot of people drop out of a class their first week. But they also said that it’ll be hard to get your desired professor because not many will drop out of classes with the easy professor…

as for the waitlist, i know they reserve some spots (not waitlist) for most classes for people coming to orientation. i would assuming the waitlist people wouldn’t get in until the orientation spots are done being sorted out. also, i was told that depending on how far along you are in your degree that you would get a higher priority for certain classes than other students.

@IntCompScMajor

How do you know that the classes you want to take is being waitlisted? is there any way to view the class and the teacher yet? like put the classes in my shopping cart (that is what I did at my previous university) and then register right when my holds are taken off?

I am so worried! I’m hoping they have spots saved for us. That would be amazing. I’m still trying to get an appointment with an advisor. I have no idea what classes I need to take this fall.

I went up to the Austin campus today and went to speak with an advisor and the advisor refused to see me, they call their assistant into the room and told the assistant to tell me that I will just have to attend the August orientation and they won’t speak to me about registration. Maybe you guys will have a nicer advisor in a different department that will talk to you.

@bobbyn: [Course schedules | Office of the Registrar](Course Schedules | Office of the Registrar)

i also looked up my advisor for cns here: [TrAC Advisors](http://cns.utexas.edu/academics/advising-and-resources/transitional-advising-center/meet-your-advisors?)

and then i just emailed her to ask if i could make an appointment. she said the front desk handles making appointments, so i called the number (512.471.3796) and made an appointment with her. she said she can’t help me register for classes before orientation, but we can talk about which classes i should take and anything else along those lines. going to see her tomorrow. i’ll post on here what i was able to accomplish.

btw, those advisors are only for transfers. if you need something else, look on the right-hand side.

@bobbyn Most of the classes that I intended taking(whether they were major specific courses or general studies like Fine Arts,UGS)are waitlisted.

I have also been told that about 1/6th of the total no. of slots in each class open up for each orientation but am not sure if that does apply to all courses or specific courses that incoming freshman would take.Do correct me if I am wrong but I guess the classes in which spots would open up appear as closed on the courses schedule for someone who has not attended the orientation and those that appear as waitlisted would not open.

Like anexia stated above you can figure out your schedule at:[Course schedules | Office of the Registrar](Course Schedules | Office of the Registrar).

As far as advisers are concerned they will not entertain you till the orientation unless you have advisers who are very considerate.Every time I tried to talk to my advisers I was told to wait till the orientation. However, you may e-mail them for information that you believe you need to know before the orientation and they should get back to you. If you are in CNS the above link would do,otherwise you will have to look for advisers for your college.

Moreover, during the registration the classes that do open also fill up pretty fast and add to that the fact that we will be attending the last orientation where those who have not attended any orientation would register and those that have attended orientations in the past will add classes makes the scenario very grim.

I hope they do reserve spots on classes that are otherwise waitlisted. That would make things easier.

@anexia Are you sure about this?

I guess I have will just attend fall orientation just to be safe and to avoid any more complication in my registration process. Do you guys know where you know where you are living at for orientation? The place I am living at (castilian) won’t let me move in until August 25th and orientation is August 21-24.

@bobbyn2012 Yeah! The situation is pretty confusing.I wish I had a better understanding of the what the process would be like.

Most off-campus dorms won’t let you move in before the 24th so I guess you will have to figure out a hotel or something to live at during the orientation.

ok, i talked to my advisor and we went over what classes i should take. she doesn’t know what classes would have spots open up for orientation students. i was also told that she can’t take the bar off my registration until orientation. she said you (transfers) don’t have to go to orientation to register. if you’re not going to orientation, though, you have to email an advisor to let them know, and they will take the bar off your registration at the same time the bars come off for the orientation students. she also said to keep ~7 back-up choices for each class just in case they don’t work out.

i was also able to go and get my student id card. they charge you $10 for it! even my community college doesn’t charge you for an id. you have 30 days to pay for it and they take everything BUT visa online. you can pay for it on campus, but of course they’re closed on the weekends.

oh, she also told me that everything we went over is exactly what the advisors will go over with you during orientation. so it’s really not essential to talk to an advisor beforehand. pretty much all we did was do some degree audits (which you can do yourself on the system) and figure out what classes were left that i needed to take. i was kind of unsure about what the humanities and ugs requirements were, so we talked about those too.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me what the UGS 302/303 is? Also, did you ask her if they reserved spots that they open up for fall orientation people?

the ugs classes are just weird, random classes you can take and they’re only available at ut austin. nothing can transfer for credit in its place. i think she said it’s to help you gain a sense of community for whatever subject you’re picking and to help you talk to others about it.

she said since spots open up for summer orientation she would assume the same would happen for fall.
