I'm an incoming transfer student this fall and I have some orientation questions:

-Is the student orientation strictly for students? My parents were gonna come with me but after reading through the orientation site and seeing there is a separate family orientation, I wanted to know if it were OK for them to tag along.
-Do we have to be there AT 7:30, or we check-in or something at that time? I was thinking of flying in that morning and going straight to UCLA from the airport, but the flight arrives at 7:15. is this a bad idea?

Orientation is for students. I suggest that you let your parents wander around on their own, as you'll be the odd duck if you tote your 'rents with you.

Or better yet, make them go to the UCLA store and buy you some swag.

I encourage your parents to pay the $60 and go to parent orientation instead of following you around. Its fun to meet the other parents, and seeing the UCLA Deans/ other presenters is excellent for their piece of mind. I gained much insight, and its really just about the only chance they have to meet administrators. It really was a full day.

Thanks for the responses..haha, now that that's clear, my parents don't really want to go anymore.

So I think I'll fly down by myself from Norcal. Should I take the morning flight? 7:15 arrival is cutting it pretty close, and I know traffic's bad in LA, but how bad...will I be able to make it from LAX to UCLA in time, or should I just fly down the night before?

I've got the same problem, but I've already been to two summer sessions at UCLA, lived in the dorms, and taken the tours, so the main reason I'm coming is just to register for classes and meet people. How bad would it be to miss a few hours on the first day so I can take a later flight?

When I visited, it took ~15-20 min by car (not at rush hour though) so I think you should be okay, but if you're checking your bags (I really wouldn't) it'll take some time for you to get your bags + time to find a cab.

does anyone know what happens the first few hours after the 8:00 am start time (singing, touring, shots, welcome speech) and would it be a major problem if I missed some of it?"

if we don't enroll in classes during orientation, can we do it some other way?

Yes, you can always wait until the end of the orientations, when your enrollment time is unlocked. However, that can be fatal sometimes. Only sometimes.

You won't regret any of it I promise you, unless you love to hear speeches.

So if I don't attend orientation, I can only enroll AFTER everyone else? No matter what?? how lame.

....Fatal how? Is it worth the $365 or will i really be stuck in a year's worth of early morning and random crappy classes and weird class times?

"You won't regret any of it I promise you, unless you love to hear speeches".

Thanks Boelter, and I don't really care about speeches, I just want to know if I can arrive late on the first day without causing some kind of "fatal" problem. I've been to UCLA, lived in the dorms, got graded on a summer program. I know the campus very well but I want to get my class schedule set, and that's the main reason I need to come for orientation. Anybody have any information about missing the first few hours and still being OK with the program?

7:15 is cutting it close only if you don't know backroads. when i went for the black student thing my flight arrived at around 8ish but the bus didn't come for us until 9. the traffic on the freeway was crazy but what else do you expect, we got there in about 20 mins only because the guy driving my group got off and took a bunch of sideroads to ucla. but i think it would be fine. personally, i opted for the early arrival. staying with my grandparents in pasadena and they're driving me up sunday night

Nothing wrong with arriving a couple of hours (4-5) late on the first day - you might have to check in at the orientation office in Covel (or wherever it will be then...) but it's no big deal. I recommend it.

An additional plus - no lines to get your bruin card.

A year's worth of crappy classes...not quite. Maybe for your first quarter; in my experience that isn't always the case. Last year, I was in session 111 but I was still able to get into all of the courses I needed for my major...

How long does it take to enroll in the classes? could I possibly speed through and make it back to LAX for a 9 PM flight..haha now thats cutting it close

not new honors students. freshman accepted to the honors program get priority enrollment starting WINTER quarter. so your fall quarter classes, which you sign up for at orientation, don't get priority.
