So I was accepted into both schools. I’m torn on which to lean towards. I am in Ohio, so I would get in-state tuition, as well as a $12,000 scholarship (across 4 years). Marquette gave me $47,000 over 4 years, so Miami would still be cheaper. Money is no problem at either school, so tuition doesn’t make or break any choices.
I have a small insight on Miami from a few “social” visits. I’ve been on Marquette’s campus for only 3 hours during an official visit, so not much on the student life. I also don’t know anyone personally that attends Marquette, so it’s difficult to see what the school has to offer in social terms.
Does anyone have experience with either school? My other options include Krannart Business (Purdue) and University of Dayton.
I’m fairly sure Farmer is ranked higher, but Marquette seems to be “up and coming” and I’m wondering which would be more beneficial in the long run.
I would favor Miami - it’s cheaper, probably a little better academics and I like the location quite a bit more. Where did you feel more comfortable? What did you think about where Marquette is located in Milwaukee?
Having the campus in the middle of the city seems great for internships, but kind of concerns me at the same time. I have 0 experience in a large urban area. Like I said, I spent next to no time at Marquette, and was under constant pressure from my parents while there.
No, not religiously affiliated (coming from catholic high school)
Yes, having a game day seems great
Mother is very much pushing toward Marquette because she says its “up and coming” and in the city
I got direct admit to the business school, I don’t think I got into honors
Farmer is very, very highly ranked for business nationally. Miami-Ohio is a great school and is praised for its focus on undergraduates. The campus is beautiful and there are lots of interesting LLCs. Direct admit to Farmer would be hard to turn down!
Check wrt Honors, or ask if you can apply.
Marquette has a distinctive Catholic vibe and is more “sporty” (both for sports-related school spirit, enthusiasm for spectator sports, etc.)
In terms of environment, I’d say it’s a toss up, depending on what you like, but I’d personally prefer a college town such as Oxford.
-Do you have a direct admit into Farmer? If not that is a factor IMO (and you would really have to research how competitive admission to the b-school is etc.). Miami Ohio is ranked pretty high for business.
-Can you visit Marquette again? Maybe you can arrange to shadow a student for a day, attend a class etc. so you can get a better sense of that campus. It sounds like as of now you are not 100% comfortable so a second visit might push you one way or the other.
–Did you look at the required classes at each school? As a Jesuit university, it is likely that Marquette will have a large liberal arts core curriculum (with classes in theology, philosophy etc.). I can’t say for sure what classes Marquette requires but my S went to another Jesuit university and the core curriculum was rigorous. You may want to google Marquette’s core curriculum and see if it appeals to you.
–Are you considering Purdue? Purdue also has a fine b-school as well from what I understand but if you don’t want a very big fairly STEM oriented school it may not be the right place for you.
But most impt., congratulations on having a number of excellent choices. Now you are in the position to pick the school you think will be best for you-- how great is that?
