Farmer's Market on campus, Tuesdays

Houston Farmers Market Note box on lower right.

Fresh fruit throughout the year, 3:30 - 7 PM. Yes?
Any first-hand accounts would be appreciated...

It’s cute! They’ve got some good stuff. It’s on some empty space by the back parking lots. Would sometimes stop with roommates while running the outer loop.

It’s pretty small, but it’s still fun! Here’s a link to info: [Houston Farmers Market](http://www.farmersmarket.rice.edu/)
The guy who sells the Indian food is my favorite!

Thanks, Silent Sailor and Black-eyed Susan…
So there are some ready-made Indian dishes to pick up for study breaks?
Sounds nice – reasonably priced? Seasonal fruits and veggies? Other treats?

My daughter went a few times last year. She said there were some nice things (desserts, berries, as I remember). It’s limited and a bit pricey, I guess. Maybe if more students went it would attract more vendors.

its pricey yes, but farmrs markets always are. the quality is excellent though

I’ve never been to the farmers’ market @ Rice but I’ve wanted to go for awhile now. I’m sad to hear that it’s pricey… All farmers’ markets I’ve ever been to were super reasonable, and if you get there later in the day right before they go to pack up, they lower the prices unbelievably. Maybe this also happens at the Rice one??

Maybe farmers’ markets in the city (or posh areas like Rice Village/West U) are always pricey… because they can get away with it.

Thanks – it really sounds like an accessible and healthy option to explore! And maybe,
as Berkeley Mom suggested, there’ll be more to choose from once more students make
time to stop by to see what’s for sale… Tuesdays, after afternoon classes are over or after dinner …

reid - they all are reasonable for the quality, however if you compare vs. say target its pricey.

the rice one isnt unreasonable compared to some in Palo Alto, Mountainview and Los Altos CA as well as Somerville, MA

All those free samples sound pretty tempting – and study snacks for later…

Very expensive and not allot of choice, I’m told. Houston is a large urban and suburban land mass not known for growing produce. With endless 100 degree days, I doubt it produces copious amounts either.

So you haven’t actually been to Farmer’s Market …

PlentyQuestions - most sellers actually drive in from outside of the city with their products. A roommate and I stopped a few weeks ago and I bought some GREAT naan and channa masala from a guy who works in Hillcroft - so not everything is technically grown.

PlentyQuestions – that’s quite an ignorant response to say that there’s not much produce produced locally. Have you ever driven out of the city in any direction and seen farm/ranch after farm/ranch? You might want to visit this farmer’s market and the myriad of others held in the city on a regular basis to see what is produced locally. And silentsailor – the Indian food purveyor is great! That’s my favorite as well.

I’ve gone a few times and bought some fresh fruit. They had delicious peaches and pears. The peaches were pricey, but the pears weren’t too bad. It was worth it!

Looks like it keeps getting better and better …
