How 'bout the food?

How's the food at Rice? Is there a lot of Southwestern options? Pleeeeease say yes!

Also, where's the nearest taco bell? Say there's one on campus!

The food is alright...although it depends on what college you are in. If you are in Wiess, Hanszen, Martel, Jones, or Brown, then your food will be good. If you are in any other college, you either deal with no-so-good food or walk to the other colleges. Of course no matter where you are, on-campus food gets old. For you, that means a trip to Taco Bell. There is not one on campus but there is one a few blocks south of campus where Holcombe meets Greenbriar.

And of southwestern options on-campus?

there are no other food options on campus besides the serveries and the RMC.

Well I'm not sure what exactly you call southwestern. There is certainly Tex-mex if that fits under the category.

Or walk to Rice village for yummy Indian food!

The food in the serveries is really good. I was impressed by it and for a college, its good stuff. And much to my surprise, there are MANY vegetarian options

I am not sure if I would say that there are MANY vegetarian options at Rice. I think there are a fair amount, but I do often find myself unsatisfied. Though they make a mean black bean stew and a lentil stew. Here is a link to the menus of each of the colleges http://food.rice.edu/ Surprisingly, they even have the menu up for this week (surprising to me because it means they are keeping up with it even when school hasn't started). I am in Lovett and the food is alright. I wouldn't say it is great or that it is horrible. It is kinda hit or miss, but I ate at the South servery for almost every meal throughout the week, save breakfast. There is usually a "mexican" day once a week. At south this means quesadillas, chimichangas, enchiladas, sour cream, and GUACAMOLE! I love guacamole and there is usually plenty of it.

Oooo one thing that I like about eating in the serveries is the fact there is always dessert. They are almost always great- don't eat the cheese cake- nothing edible should have that type of texture.

well, I am a vegetarian and I find it decent. There is the whole huge salad bar... black bean burgersw on request and vegetarian main courses too

I'm a vegetarian too. I wouldn't bother making that comment if I wasn't.

hmm... well, let me rephrase it then.. there are a decent set of choices for vegetariaans..

Ive eaten at other places too, and compared to them its good. (UT Austin is supposed to be a vegetarian nightmare)

the vegetarian options are, in my opinion, very good. there are 2 sections (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) with 4 dishes each in the north servery that i eat at. and usually 1 of the dishes in the non-vegetarian section is a vegetable anyway. the salad bar is also great. i would go so far as to say it is better for vegetarian people.

haha wow so many vegetarians.
Now I won't feel out of place if I'm there next year :]

lol omz.... i WOULD..LOL

??????????????

So...basically nobody who is not a vegetarian has given an in-depth answer.....

well, non vegetarians neever have a problem.. beccause they can eat everything...

And my friends seem to like it. Its supposed to be quite decent

I'm not a vegetarian. And I like Rice food.

People tend to rag on Lovett food, but I think the selection is generally pretty good. We always have a really good salad bar, a chicken or beef dish (or both), a vegetarian dish, some sort of side, steamed vegetables, an unhealthy option, and something fried. If you don't like the selection at your college, you can always eat at South Servery.

(Just a quick note: within the next couple of years the university is building the East Servery between Lovett and Will Rice, and possibly Sid. That means Baker will be the only college with its own servery.)

Also, the off-campus options can't be beat, especially if you or a friend has a car. Anyone from the South will appreciate that I've replaced my Waffle House cravings with House of Pies cravings. Also, it's Houston, so there are a myriad of great Tex-Mex restaurants off-campus.

The Village doesn't really cater to Rice students (which is sad), but there are a few good restaurants there within students' budgets.

The Med Center is currently constructing a new building (The Memorial Hermann Plaza, better known as "The Med Center Rainbow Building") acrosss from Lovett College. The building will have three floors (so I hear) of retail and restaurants, so that gives us another off-campus option within walking distance.

There is food in the med center thats walkig distance.. (Azumi sushi, Popeye's, Chipotle, Subway)

Also, you can orrder pizza to be delivered to aalmosst your dorm...

The off-campus options really are awesome. I want to live off-campus simply because the food options are much better and much cheaper. Wan Fu (decent Chinese restaurant) is next to Popeye's. Here are the options really close to Rice (most are 1-2 mi away).
