For current students or alumni
Who were/are your favorite teachers, and what classes would you recommend taking (especially for general education requirements)?

This is a great idea…hopefully we can hear from regular general education students, TO students, people in very specified majors, etc.

I had professor Lee for business WRIT 340. You don’t have to be a business student to take it (I am not). She’s a great professor. The class is by far the easiest I’ve taken at USC, but that’s because of the business part not the Prof. Lee part.

If you have 4 units to spend, hands down take film symposium. Best class ever. If you don’t need the units and have 4 free, audit the class, come in to watch a new release movie then leave. As for GEs, I took Russian Thought and Civilization (SLL330 GE category II) with professor Damare, it was a really interesting class (a lot of reading as with any GE) and he was a great teacher

artl101, soci150: easy A

I will second Film Symposium (CTCS466) and I will also second auditing the class. All I had to do was go in, watch movies, listen to thoughtful discussion, and learn. No stress!

My cat 5 GE, Arts and Letters, was this class called Philosophy and Literature of Ancient Greece, taught by one Prof. Kevin Robb. Not an easy class, but enlightening and interesting.

bmanbs2 - how long ago did you take that 340 class? I have to take it sometime next year and I am debating options. I heard that they re-did the business 340 curriculum because so many people considered it a joke.

^ I’m taking it right now.

Are you a business major? How many people are in the class? And what sort of assignments do you guys get?

If you read my previous post, you’ll see that I’m not a business major. There are about 18 people in the class. We’ve written two 4-page papers so far.

“I took Russian Thought and Civilization (SLL330 GE category II) with professor Damare, it was a really interesting class (a lot of reading as with any GE) and he was a great teacher”

I was going to say this, too! It was such a great class and Prof. Damare is really engaging and passionate about the material. Plus, you read a lot of interesting works of fiction (and nonfiction) from some pretty fabulous Russian writers. One of my favorite GEs.

for Arts and Letters (not sure if it’s still offered) I took a class called “Women and Revolution in the Middle East” that I absolutely loved. Great professor, great materials, awesome class all around.

I also recommended CST 190 with Prof. Casper and the Rock Film class with Prof. James for film students or anyone interested in music/film.

The Beatles and History of Rock classes are awesome as well; I think the professor I had strictly teaches the Beatles and synthesizer classes now, but they are worth looking into if you are into music and possibly want to become a critic.

Any MUIN majors/minor should take Live Music Production and Promotion with Lopez. Really great class where your final project is to put on a concert somewhere in Los Angeles. You really learn a lot about what goes into running a successful live show/venue if that’s what you want to get into.

I had a great ARLT class, Types and Stereotypes of the American West in Literature and Film with Shoop. I don’t particularly like Westerns, but he was a great professor and it was a very informative class.

I also loved/love THTR 125 & 210 with Angus Fletcher. He’s just a fantastic professor and his lectures are really entertaining. I think those classes are only for theatre majors, though.

I’ll definitely second CTCS 190 with Casper. Such an informative and great class.

And I’ll go with the unpopular here and say that I actually enjoy WRIT 140, probably because I have a good instructor (Donohue). We have it at 8am, but she’s energetic and entertaining, and I don’t usually mind being up that early for that class. We also have good prompts, which makes writing the papers at least somewhat enjoyable. Or not atrocious.

I liked my WRIT 340, too. Just depends on the teacher AND the kids in your class.

And RE: Casper – we is the kind of professor you either LOVE or HATE. There is no gray area. He kinda treats his students the same way, too. If you make yourself known in the class and provide insightful opinions, he’ll latch onto quickly; if you continually make an ass of yourself through your comments in class, he will never let you live it down.

Luckily, I was one of the students he liked. And he never forget my name, even four years after I took the class.

take any PE class with Steve Vankanegan. Great person, great coach.
